Causes
- Open or short in DPF pressure sensor wiring (A circuit)
- Corroded, loose or contaminated sensor connector
- Failed DPF pressure sensor (internal fault)
- Blocked or restricted DPF, clogged soot trap or plugged exhaust
- Damaged or collapsed pressure/vacuum hoses or ports to the sensor
- Water/soot ingress into sensor or harness
Symptoms
- Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
- DPF or emissions warning message on dash
- Reduced engine power or limp-home mode (in some models)
- Difficulty completing automatic or forced regeneration, frequent regens
- Poor fuel economy and increased exhaust smoke
- DPF-related fault codes stored
What to check
- Read and record freeze frame and all stored/active DTCs with a diagnostic scanner
- Inspect sensor connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, or water ingress
- Visually inspect DPF pressure hoses/ports for kinks, restriction or disconnection
- Monitor live data: DPF differential pressure sensor voltage and calculated pressure
- Backprobe sensor connector and measure reference voltage, signal voltage and ground
- Perform continuity and short-to-ground/power checks on the harness
Signal parameters
- Sensor typically uses an ECU reference supply (approx. 5 V) and a ground; signal output is a varying voltage proportional to pressure
- Expected signal range (typical): approximately 0.5–4.5 V depending on pressure (manufacturer specifics vary)
- Low-circuit symptom: signal stuck near 0–0.3 V or sudden drop to near 0 V
- High-circuit symptom: signal stuck near supply (around 4.7–5 V) or constant max value
- Normal behavior: small pressure/low voltage at idle, higher voltage/pressure under load or when DPF is restricted
Diagnostic algorithm
- Connect a diagnostic scanner, read and note all DTCs and freeze frame data; clear the code and attempt to reproduce.
- Visually inspect the DPF pressure sensor, connector, and sensing hoses for damage, contamination or disconnection.
- With ignition ON (engine off), backprobe the sensor connector: verify reference voltage (approx. 5 V), good ground continuity, and measure signal voltage. Compare to expected ranges.
- Start the engine and monitor live sensor voltage/pressure. Observe changes during idle, blips of throttle, and during a forced regen if safe. Look for erratic or no change.
- If signal is absent or out-of-range, perform harness continuity checks from the sensor connector to the ECU pins. Check for short to power or ground.
- Inspect and test sensing hoses/ports for blockage; remove and clean ports and hoses if contaminated. Replace damaged hoses.
- If wiring and hoses check good but signal is still bad, substitute a known-good pressure sensor (or bench-test the sensor if possible).
- If new sensor fixes the issue, reinstall and clear codes; run vehicle to confirm. If fault persists with known-good sensor, suspect ECU or intermittent wiring; perform further ECU and wiring diagnostics.
- If DPF restriction is present, address DPF condition (soot loading, ash, or physical blockage) per manufacturer procedures before replacing sensors.
- After repair, confirm proper regeneration behavior and that the code does not return during a driving/regeneration cycle.
Likely causes
- Failed or intermittent DPF pressure sensor
- Damaged connector or wiring (open, short to ground or 5 V)
- Blocked DPF causing abnormal pressure that trips sensor limits
- Collapsed or disconnected sensing hose between DPF and sensor
Fault status
Status
DPF Pressure Sensor A Circuit — electrical fault detected in the DPF differential pressure sensor circuit. May cause incorrect DPF monitoring/regeneration and trigger MIL/emissions warnings.
Repair difficulty: Medium
Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.5 hours
