EVAP System Leak Detection Pump Switching Valve Stuck On

Brand: Generic

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Stuck or seized switching valve (mechanical failure)
  • Short circuit to battery or wiring shorted on (electrical stuck-ON)
  • Failed leak detection pump or internal valve contamination (dirt, debris, fuel residue)
  • Corroded or damaged connector or harness at the valve
  • Failed EVAP purge/vent components causing abnormal pressure signals
  • Faulty PCM or control module (rare)

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Failed EVAP system readiness or failed emissions test
  • Check-engine light with EVAP-related diagnostics
  • Possible fuel odor near fuel tank or EVAP canister area
  • Unable to complete EVAP leak detection/test cycle

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze frame and confirm P24C0 and any related EVAP codes (P0442/P0455/P0446/P0441 etc.)
  • Check vehicle service information for valve location, pinout and wiring diagrams
  • Visually inspect valve, connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, pin push-out or melted insulation
  • Backprobe the switching valve connector while commanding the valve ON/OFF using a scan tool; observe voltage response
  • Measure coil resistance of the switching valve with an ohmmeter and compare to spec
  • Check for short to battery on the control wire (voltage present with key off) and short to ground conditions

Signal parameters

  • Commanded ON: control circuit should show battery voltage (~11–14 V) when commanded active
  • Commanded OFF: control circuit should be near 0 V (or PCM reference voltage as specified) when deactivated
  • Typical solenoid coil resistance (generic): roughly 5–50 ohms (consult vehicle spec for exact value)
  • Typical current draw (generic): ~0.1–2 A when energized (consult vehicle spec)
  • No continuous battery voltage on control wire with ignition off (no-key voltage indicates short/stuck ON)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all codes, freeze frame and readiness status. Clear codes and see if P24C0 returns.
  2. Consult OEM service manual for valve location, connector pinout, and exact electrical specs.
  3. Visually inspect valve, harness and connector for damage, corrosion or rodent damage. Repair any wiring faults.
  4. With a scan tool, command the switching valve ON and OFF while backprobing the connector. Verify voltage changes to show control and response.
  5. Measure valve coil resistance at the connector (unplugged). Compare to OEM spec. An open or shorted coil indicates a bad valve.
  6. Check for a short to battery: with ignition off, measure voltage on the control lead. If battery voltage present, trace and repair short in harness or relay.
  7. If valve appears electrically good but will not move, check for mechanical sticking. Remove valve and bench-test with appropriate voltage (per service data) or apply air/vacuum to check movement—use safe procedures and ventilate area.
  8. Perform EVAP smoke/pressure test to identify related blockages or leaks that may affect pump/valve operation.
  9. Replace faulty switching valve and/or repair wiring as indicated. If PCM-related or intermittent, verify after repair and reflash/update PCM software if service info requires.
  10. Clear codes, run readiness/self-test, and road test. Re-scan to confirm the code does not return.

Likely causes

  • Faulty switching valve (most common)
  • Wiring short to battery feeding the valve continuously
  • Connector corrosion or pin damage causing stuck signal
  • Contamination or foreign debris preventing valve from returning to OFF
  • Faulty leak-detection pump affecting valve operation
