Causes

  • Faulty or worn PTO enable switch
  • Damaged, corroded, or loose connector or wiring in the switch circuit
  • High resistance or short to voltage/ground in the circuit
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay supplying the PTO enable circuit
  • Poor ground at the module or switch
  • Faulty PTO control module or engine control module (ECM/PCM)

Symptoms

  • PTO will not engage or engages intermittently
  • PTO indicator light or dash message for PTO fault
  • DTC P258E stored in vehicle memory
  • Loss of expected PTO control functionality (e.g., remote control not working)
  • No change when toggling the PTO switch, or erratic behavior

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze frame data and any related codes with a scan tool
  • Visually inspect PTO switch, connector, wiring harness, and any fuses/relays
  • Perform wiggle test on switch wiring while monitoring live data for signal changes
  • Check for proper power and ground at the switch connector
  • Measure switch output voltage or resistance with switch on/off
  • Inspect for water, corrosion, or contamination in switch and connectors

Signal parameters

  • Switch OFF: expected ~0 V (or low voltage close to 0–0.5 V) to the module on signal circuit for most 5 V reference systems
  • Switch ON: expected ~5 V (for 5 V reference systems) or ~12 V (for 12 V-switched systems) depending on design
  • Typical allowable fluctuation: steady signal without rapid oscillation; intermittent spikes indicate high resistance or short
  • Expected continuity: closed circuit or specified low resistance when switch actuated; open/infinite resistance when released

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a diagnostic scan tool. Confirm P258E and note freeze frame/live data when the fault set.
  2. Check vehicle fuses and relays related to PTO power and control; replace any blown fuses and test relays.
  3. Visually inspect the PTO enable switch, housing, and connector for corrosion, water intrusion, broken pins, or damaged wires.
  4. With ignition on, backprobe the switch connector and verify reference voltage, signal voltage, and ground. Compare readings with expected values for OFF and ON positions.
  5. Perform a continuity/resistance check of the switch circuit from the switch connector to the control module. Look for high resistance or intermittent open.
  6. Wiggle wiring harness and connectors while monitoring live signal to reproduce intermittent faults. Repair broken wires or crimps.
  7. If wiring and switch test good, test or replace the PTO enable switch with a known-good part or bench-test replacement.
  8. If switch and wiring are confirmed good, check the PTO control module/ECM inputs and grounds. Reflash or update module software if recommended by OEM.
  9. Clear codes and perform functional test of PTO operation. Monitor for recurrence and record results.
  10. If fault persists after component replacement and wiring repair, consult manufacturer service information for module-level diagnostics or replacement.

Likely causes

  • Intermittent/open or shorted wiring between PTO switch and module
  • Corroded switch connector or terminals causing poor contact
  • Failed PTO enable switch (internal contact failure)
  • Bad ground or power feed to switch
  • Defective PTO control module or control software

Fault status

⚠️ Status
P258E - PTO Enable Switch Performance: Switch circuit signal is outside expected parameters (open, short, or intermittent). PTO enable may be unavailable or unreliable.
