Causes

  • Open or short to ground in the rocker arm actuator control wiring
  • Poor or corroded connector or pin at the actuator or ECM
  • Faulty rocker arm actuator / solenoid (electrical failure)
  • Low battery or poor battery/charging system voltage during operation
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay supplying the actuator circuit
  • Low engine oil pressure or very dirty oil preventing actuator movement

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and live data with a scan tool for actuator status and related codes
  • Visually inspect wiring harness, connectors and pins at the actuator and ECM for damage, corrosion, or oil contamination
  • Verify engine oil level and condition; change/filter if overdue
  • Check battery voltage and charging system under load
  • Check related fuses and relays
  • Backprobe actuator connector to observe command voltage/PWM and actual circuit voltage while cranking/idle

Signal parameters

  • Command type: ECM typically uses switched 12 V or ground-driven PWM to control actuator solenoid (varies by manufacturer)
  • Normal control voltage: ranges up to battery voltage when commanded; low (near 0 V) when circuit fault present
  • Typical solenoid resistance: generally in the single- to low-double-digit ohms (spec varies by vehicle) — compare to OEM spec
  • Expected PWM frequency and duty vary by design; consult OEM data for exact values
  • A 'Low' DTC indicates measured circuit voltage or feedback is below expected threshold while commanded

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Capture freeze frame and related PIDs. Note conditions (RPM, temp, oil temp).
  2. Visually inspect connectors and harness for damage, oil intrusion, or corrosion at the Bank 1 B actuator and ECM connector.
  3. Verify engine oil level and condition. If very low or contaminated, correct and clear codes, retest.
  4. With ignition on (engine off) and/or running as required by OEM, backprobe the actuator connector. Observe commanded signal (voltage or PWM) and actual circuit voltage.
  5. Measure actuator coil/solenoid resistance. Compare to OEM spec. Infinite/very high = open; near zero = short.
  6. Check for short to ground or short to battery in the control circuit using an ohmmeter and powered voltage tests. Repair any shorted wires.
  7. Repair or replace damaged wiring, connectors, or poor grounds. Re-test circuit after repairs.
  8. If wiring and actuator test good, replace the rocker arm actuator / solenoid for Bank 1 B per OEM service procedure (follow cleanliness and torque requirements).
  9. If fault persists after actuator replacement, consider ECM/PCM fault and perform module tests or replacement per OEM guidance.
  10. Clear codes and perform a road/validation drive to confirm repair; re-scan for return of code.

  • Damaged wiring or connector to the actuator (most common)
  • Failed rocker arm actuator / solenoid
  • Corroded/loose ground or power feed
  • Low oil level/contaminated oil causing actuator to stick
