Causes

  • Recently replaced or re-used fuel injector(s) not coded to the vehicle
  • Incorrect injector part number or aftermarket injector with different characteristics
  • Corroded/bent injector connector or poor electrical connection
  • Damaged injector harness or intermittent wiring/short to power or ground
  • PCM/ECU lost learned injector data or has corrupted memory
  • Software or calibration mismatch after a module update or replacement

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Rough idle or misfire on affected cylinder(s)
  • Reduced engine power or hesitation on acceleration
  • Hard starting or increased crank time
  • Possible limp-home mode on some vehicles

What to check

  • Read full ECU memory and note freeze-frame data and related codes
  • Confirm vehicle VIN, software/calibration level and recent service history (injector or ECU replacement)
  • Visually inspect injector connectors for corrosion, bent pins, or poor seating
  • Measure injector coil resistance and compare to spec for that injector type
  • Check harness continuity between injector connector and ECU (pins) and for shorts to battery/ground
  • Check fuel rail pressure and condition of injectors for mechanical faults

Signal parameters

  • Injector ID / coding value (manufacturer-specific)
  • Injector coil resistance (Ohms) per cylinder
  • Injector pulse width (ms) during idle and load
  • Cylinder balance / trim values
  • Misfire counters per cylinder
  • Fuel rail pressure (bar/psi)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect OEM-level diagnostic tool and retrieve detailed injector data, recorded parameters and freeze-frame
  2. Check for and record any other related DTCs (injector circuit, misfire, CAN bus)
  3. Visually inspect and reseat injector electrical connectors; repair any damaged pins or terminals
  4. Measure resistance of each injector and compare to specification; record any outliers
  5. Perform harness continuity and short-to-power/ground checks on injector circuits back to the ECU
  6. If a replacement injector is present, confirm correct part number and compatibility with vehicle
  7. Use manufacturer diagnostic tool to read injector ID/coding; if missing or incorrect, perform injector coding/programming procedure per service documentation
  8. If coding cannot be written or values are inconsistent, consider swapping injectors to see if the fault follows the injector (helps isolate harness vs injector vs ECU)
  9. If wiring and injectors test good, check/perform ECU software/firmware update or reflash and clear learned injector adaptations, then re-run adaptations per procedure
  10. Clear codes and road-test. Monitor for return of P268C and verify drivability and cylinder balance

Likely causes

  • Injector(s) fitted but not programmed with correct ID/coding
  • Injector wiring open/short affecting injector ID or control signals
  • Injector internal fault causing abnormal electrical parameters
  • PCM needs software reflash or injection adaptation reset
  • Modules from different production spec or vehicle option fitted without reconfiguration

Fault status

⚠️ Status
