Causes

  • Failed or sticking coolant bypass valve (mechanical or actuator failure)
  • Open, shorted or high-resistance wiring to the valve
  • Poor connector contact or corrosion at the valve connector
  • Blocked coolant passages or foreign material preventing valve movement
  • Low coolant level or air in cooling system
  • Faulty coolant temp sensor or related temperature feedback (affecting diagnostics)

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Incorrect or fluctuating engine coolant temperature readings
  • Longer than normal warm-up time or failure to reach operating temperature
  • Poor heater performance or inconsistent cabin heating
  • Possible overheating under some conditions if bypass stays closed
  • Stored DTC(s) and reduced engine/thermal management control

What to check

  • Read stored and pending codes and capture freeze frame / live data
  • Visually inspect valve, connector and wiring for damage, corrosion or coolant contamination
  • Check coolant level and inspect for air trapped in the cooling system
  • Backprobe connector to verify power, ground and control signal while commanding valve
  • Command valve ON/OFF (or vary duty) with a scan tool and observe response
  • Verify coolant flow change or valve movement during commanded operations

Signal parameters

  • Control signal type: PWM duty cycle or switched 0–12 V control (monitor percent duty or voltage)
  • Expected control voltage range: 0–12 V (varies by design) and changes when commanded
  • Duty cycle range: 0–100% (if PWM controlled) and should change when commanded
  • Response time: valve should respond promptly when commanded (seconds)
  • Engine coolant temperature response: temperature should change predictably with valve operation

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify DTC P26B0 is current. Record freeze frame and any related codes (coolant temp, thermostat, fan).
  2. Perform a visual inspection of the coolant bypass valve, hoses, connector, and wiring for damage, corrosion, or coolant intrusion.
  3. Check coolant level and condition. Top up and properly bleed air from the cooling system if low/air is present.
  4. Using a scan tool, command the bypass valve while monitoring control signal (voltage or duty) and coolant temperature/flow. Note if signal changes and whether valve or flow responds.
  5. Backprobe the valve connector to verify correct supply voltage and ground with key on and while commanded. Look for intermittent connections by wiggling wiring.
  6. Measure control circuit continuity and insulation to ground; repair any opens, shorts, or high resistance.
  7. If electrical supply and command are correct but valve does not move, remove and bench-test the valve (apply appropriate voltage/pulse per service information) or replace valve.
  8. Inspect cooling passages and the thermostat for restrictions or deposits that could make valve operation ineffective. Flush or service cooling passages if needed.
  9. After repair, clear codes, perform relevant relearns or bleed procedures, then road test and re-scan to confirm code does not return and coolant temperature behavior is normal.
  10. If the circuit and valve check good but DTC persists, consider module/ECM diagnosis or software update per manufacturer service information.

Likely causes

  • Wiring or connector fault (open, short, corrosion)
  • Bypass valve actuator electrically driven failed or mechanically seized
  • Deposits or debris preventing valve movement
  • Low coolant level or trapped air preventing normal flow
