Pressure control solenoid Control E - high circuit

Causes

  • Open or shorted wiring in the solenoid E control circuit (short to battery/voltage)
  • Corroded, loose, or damaged connector at the solenoid or transmission harness
  • Failed pressure control solenoid E (internal shorted coil or stuck valve)
  • Faulty transmission control module (TCM/PCM) driver output
  • Blown fuse or poor ground related to transmission control circuit
  • Contaminated or very low transmission fluid causing solenoid mechanical issues

Symptoms

  • Check Engine / MIL or Transmission warning light illuminated
  • Transmission may go into limp/limitation mode or default gear
  • Harsh or delayed shifts, incorrect gear selection
  • Transmission slipping or abnormal shift timing
  • Stored or pending transmission-related fault codes

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze frame and live data with a suitable scan tool; note when the fault sets
  • Visual inspection of transmission wiring harness and solenoid connector for damage, corrosion, or fluid intrusion
  • Back-probe solenoid connector and measure voltage with ignition ON (engine off) and during active test
  • Measure solenoid coil resistance with connector disconnected
  • Check for short to battery (high voltage) and for unintended continuity to chassis ground
  • Verify related fuses and grounds for integrity

Signal parameters

  • Expected battery voltage at solenoid supply: ~11–14 V (key ON, engine running)
  • Driver output: often a switched ground or PWM signal from TCM; when inactive should read near supply or open depending on design
  • Typical solenoid coil resistance (varies by model): commonly 6–40 ohms — check OEM spec
  • PWM frequency (if used) commonly 50–300 Hz; duty cycle varies with commanded pressure
  • High-circuit fault condition: measured voltage at control pin remains near battery voltage or higher than expected commanded level

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all stored and pending codes and freeze-frame data with a diagnostic scan tool.
  2. Inspect solenoid E connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, or fluid contamination. Repair or clean as needed.
  3. With ignition ON (engine off), back-probe the solenoid connector: confirm battery feed/supply and control/driver voltage. Compare to expected values.
  4. Disconnect the solenoid connector and measure coil resistance between the solenoid pins. Compare to OEM spec. An open or very low resistance suggests a fault.
  5. Check continuity between the control pin and the TCM; check for unintended continuity to battery (+) and to ground. Repair any shorts or opens found.
  6. If wiring and solenoid check good, perform an active solenoid command using scan tool while monitoring voltages to confirm TCM driver operation and response.
  7. If the TCM output is stuck high and wiring/solenoid are good, consider TCM replacement or reprogramming following manufacturer procedures.
  8. After repairs, clear codes and perform a road/operation test and re-scan to confirm the fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Damaged wiring harness near transmission (chafing/heat/damage)
  • Connector pins pushed out, corroded, or contaminated
  • Solenoid coil internal short causing high circuit voltage reading
  • Aftermarket or recent repair left a mis-routed harness or poor splice
  • Intermittent ECU/TCM driver failure (less common)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Transmission pressure control solenoid E control circuit - high voltage detected. The module has set a fault and may trigger MIL/limp mode. Electrical or solenoid fault suspected; inspection and testing of circuit recommended.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
