Causes

  • Failed or damaged steering gear (rack & pinion or steering box)
  • Faulty steering angle or torque sensor(s)
  • Wiring harness damage, poor connector(s) or corrosion to steering-related circuits
  • Faulty or miscalibrated steering control module / EPAS ECU
  • Hydraulic power steering fluid low, contaminated, or pump failure (if applicable)
  • Mechanical binding, excessive play, or damaged gear teeth in the steering assembly

Symptoms

  • Steering warning lamp or EPS/Power Steering warning illuminated
  • Reduced or loss of power steering assist; heavy steering effort at low speed
  • Intermittent or inconsistent steering effort or steering kickback
  • ABS/ESP warning or stability control intervention during steering events
  • Noise from steering gear (grinding, knocking) or excessive play in steering wheel
  • Possible inability to complete self-calibration of steering sensors

What to check

  • Read and record freeze-frame and live data from all steering-related modules; note any additional DTCs
  • Perform a full vehicle scan for related chassis, ABS, and communications (U) codes
  • Visual inspection of steering rack, boots, and tie-rods for damage, leaks or foreign obstruction
  • Inspect connectors and wiring at the steering rack, column, torque sensor and steering control module for corrosion, looseness or damage
  • Check power and ground at the steering control module and related sensors
  • Verify hydraulic power steering fluid level and condition (if hydraulic system)

Signal parameters

  • Steering angle sensor output (degrees)
  • Steering torque sensor output (Nm or voltage)
  • EPAS motor current draw (A)
  • Rack position or travel (mm or counts)
  • CAN bus messages and error counters for steering module
  • Power supply voltage to steering module (V)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all stored codes and live data from engine, ABS, EPS/steering module and gateway; record values and freeze frame.
  2. Visually inspect steering rack, column, boots, tie-rod ends, connectors and harness for damage, chafing, or corrosion.
  3. Verify battery voltage and main power/ground to steering control module; check fuses and relays related to EPS.
  4. With ignition on, monitor steering angle and torque sensor outputs while turning wheel slowly; look for dropouts, unrealistic values or mismatch between sensors.
  5. Check continuity and resistance of sensor harnesses (column to module, rack to module); repair any shorts/open circuits.
  6. If hydraulic, measure fluid level/pressure and inspect for leaks; verify pump operation and pressure under load.
  7. If signals and wiring are good, perform module self-tests and request/force diagnostic routines per service manual (relearn/calibration of steering angle sensor, torque sensor calibration).
  8. If a specific component fails tests (sensor, rack, EPAS module), replace only the defective part and follow manufacturer post-repair calibration and bleed procedures.
  9. After repair or replacement, clear codes, perform required calibrations, and road-test to confirm resolution; re-scan for stored or pending codes.
  10. If intermittent or CAN communication faults persist, inspect vehicle network wiring and gateway modules or consult OEM technical bulletins.

Likely causes

  • Damaged/failed torque/steering angle sensor
  • Connector/cable chafing at rack or column
  • Faulty EPAS/steering control module
  • Mechanical damage or binding in the steering rack

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Steering system gear fault detected. The steering gear or associated sensors/electrical system is reporting abnormal operation. Steering assist and vehicle stability may be affected; inspect steering gear, sensors, wiring and control module.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
