Causes
- Damaged or chafed wiring between sensor and ECM
- Loose, corroded or pushed‑out connector pins
- Water intrusion or corrosion at the sensor or connector
- Failed wastegate position sensor (internal short/open or bad potentiometer/Hall element)
- Poor ground or damaged reference supply (usually 5 V)
- Faulty turbo actuator harness or connector
Symptoms
- Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated
- Reduced engine power or limp‑in mode
- Incorrect boost control (overboost or underboost)
- Hesitation, poor throttle response or decreased fuel economy
- Turbo actuator may not follow commanded position
What to check
- Read freeze frame and live data with a scan tool (monitor wastegate position A and B values and compare)
- Visually inspect sensor, actuator and wiring harness for damage, chafing, corrosion or water
- Backprobe sensor connector to check reference voltage, signal voltage and ground
- Wiggle harness/connectors while monitoring live data to identify intermittent faults
- Measure sensor resistance or output per service data if available
- Swap/compare with wastegate position sensor A if identical and supported by manufacturer
Signal parameters
- Typical sensor output: 0.2–0.5 V at closed/minimum position up to ~4.0–4.8 V at open/full position (varies by manufacturer)
- Reference supply: typically regulated 5.0 V (±0.5 V) from ECM
- Ground: near 0 V, low resistance to vehicle chassis
- Sensor internal resistance (potentiometer style) commonly in the kiloohm range (varies)
- Signal should change smoothly without jumps as wastegate moves; both A and B channels should track each other proportionally
Diagnostic algorithm
- Read and record freeze‑frame data and all stored turbo/wastegate/boost codes. Confirm P2ABA is current.
- Inspect harness and connectors visually at the sensor and along the routed path for damage, pin corrosion, water, or loose pins.
- With ignition ON (engine OFF), backprobe the wastegate position sensor B connector: verify reference voltage (approx. 5 V), ground continuity, and resting signal voltage. Compare to sensor A and to expected/typical values.
- Slowly move the wastegate actuator (by hand or commanded via scan tool if safe) while monitoring signal voltage for smooth, proportional change. Look for erratic jumps or dropouts.
- Wiggle wiring and connectors while watching live data to reproduce intermittent faults. Check for codes setting/clearing or signal dropout.
- If available, measure sensor internal resistance per service data. If values out of range, replace sensor.
- If electrical values are abnormal at the connector, trace and repair wiring: check continuity to ECM, repair broken wires, clean/replace corroded connectors, and ensure good ground.
- If wiring and connector are good but signal still bad, replace the wastegate position sensor B and retest.
- If problem persists after sensor and wiring replacement, test ECM input for short to ground or to 5 V and consider ECM diagnosis/repair per manufacturer procedures.
- Clear codes and perform a road test/actuator calibration (if required) to verify proper operation and that the code does not return.
Likely causes
- Wiring harness damage or connector corrosion at the sensor
- Failed wastegate position sensor B
- Poor ground or lost reference voltage to the sensor
- Intermittent connection due to movement or water ingress
