Causes

  • Faulty fuel injector (mechanical or electrical failure) on cylinder 4
  • Open, shorted, corroded or damaged injector wiring or connector
  • Faulty injector driver in the ECM/PCM
  • Low or unstable fuel rail pressure or faulty fuel pressure regulator
  • Weak battery or poor power/ground to injector circuit
  • Camshaft or crankshaft timing/asynchrony affecting injector timing

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Rough idle or vibration, especially at idle
  • Misfire indication focused on cylinder 4 (p0304 may also set)
  • Loss of power, hesitation under load
  • Increased fuel consumption or black exhaust smoke
  • Hard starting or extended crank time

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame and all stored codes; clear and see if code returns
  • Scan live data: injector pulse width, injector duty cycle, misfire counters, fuel rail pressure, battery voltage
  • Visually inspect injector connector and wiring for corrosion, breaks, pin damage, or rodent chew
  • Measure injector coil resistance (compare to spec) and look for open/short
  • Use a noid light or oscilloscope on the injector connector to confirm pulse presence and waveform
  • Check fuel rail pressure at idle and under load for correct pressure and stability

Signal parameters

  • Injector coil resistance: typical range 1–20 ohms (varies by vehicle; consult spec)
  • Injector pulse width: typically 1–10 ms at idle (depends on load and engine), longer under load
  • Noid light flash frequency: matches commanded injector timing (once per intake event)
  • Fuel rail pressure: common ranges 35–70 psi (240–480 kPa) for many systems; consult vehicle spec
  • Battery voltage: 12.2–14.5 V during cranking/operation
  • Injector current waveform: clean switching edges with expected peak current for the injector type

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all codes and freeze frame data. Note conditions when code set (engine temp, RPM, load).
  2. Perform a visual inspection of cylinder 4 injector connector, wiring harness, and related grounds. Repair any obvious damage.
  3. With ignition off, measure injector coil resistance at the connector and compare to spec. Replace if out of range.
  4. Backprobe the injector connector with a noid light or oscilloscope while cranking/running to confirm injector drive pulses and waveform. Observe pulse width and shape.
  5. Verify constant battery voltage at the injector power feed and check the driver ground/back to the ECM while operating.
  6. Check fuel rail pressure and regulator operation at key-on, idle, and under load. Repair fuel system faults if pressure is low or fluctuating.
  7. Swap the suspect injector with a known good injector from another cylinder. Clear codes and run to see if the fault follows the injector (if it follows, replace injector).
  8. If the fault remains on cylinder 4 after a swap, suspect wiring between the ECM and injector or the injector driver in the ECM. Perform continuity and short-to-ground/power checks of the harness.
  9. If wiring checks good, inspect ECM injector driver output with an oscilloscope. Replace ECM only after confirming driver failure and ruling out wiring and injector.
  10. If electrical tests pass, perform mechanical checks on cylinder 4 (compression or leak-down test) and clean/test fuel injector flow as needed.
  11. After repairs, clear codes and perform a road/test cycle to confirm the code does not return and drivability is restored.

Likely causes

  • Injector electrical issue (connector, harness, connector corrosion)
  • Defective injector (sticking, clogged, shorted coil)
  • Low fuel rail pressure or failing fuel pump
  • Faulty injector driver transistor in the ECU (rare but possible)
  • Poor battery voltage or ground connection affecting pulse delivery
