Cylinder 2 Alternative Fuel Misfire Detected

Brand: Generic

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Weak or no spark on cylinder 2 (bad coil, plug, wiring, connector)
  • Faulty or clogged fuel injector for cylinder 2 or failed injector driver
  • Low compression or mechanical engine fault (valve, piston, ring, head gasket)
  • Incorrect or unstable alternative fuel delivery (regulator, vaporizer, pressure)
  • Lean or rich condition affecting cylinder 2 (vacuum leak, wrong fuel/mixture)
  • Contaminated or incorrect alternative fuel supply

Symptoms

  • Illuminated MIL/check engine light
  • Engine rough idle or vibration, especially at idle or low load
  • Loss of power and reduced drivability
  • Increased emissions and possible fuel smell (alternative fuel)
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Possible pinging/knock or unusual exhaust odor when running alternative fuel

What to check

  • Read stored and pending codes with a scan tool; view freeze frame and misfire counters for cylinder 2
  • Confirm vehicle was on alternative fuel when code set; check fuel selector/solenoid status
  • Visual inspection of spark plug, ignition coil/lead, connector and wiring for cylinder 2
  • Inspect injector connector and wiring; check injector for clogging or leakage
  • Measure fuel rail/alternative-fuel pressure against manufacturer spec
  • Check short-term and long-term fuel trim and O2 sensor readings during misfire

Signal parameters

  • Cylinder 2 misfire count/events (count or ratio relative to other cylinders)
  • Injector pulse width for cylinder 2 (ms)
  • Ignition coil dwell/primary current or secondary waveform (A / V / ms)
  • Crankshaft speed fluctuations (RPM) correlated to misfire
  • Short-term and long-term fuel trim (%)
  • O2 sensor voltage or lambda for bank(s) during event (V / lambda)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all codes and freeze-frame data. Confirm the code set while running on alternative fuel and note engine load, RPM, temp, and fuel pressure at fault.
  2. Visually inspect spark plug, coil, plug boot and wiring for cylinder 2. Replace or clean if fouled/damaged.
  3. Check fuel injector/alternative-fuel injector for cylinder 2: verify connector, resistance, and pulse with a scope or noid light. Swap with another cylinder to see if the misfire follows.
  4. Measure fuel/alternative-fuel pressure and regulator/vaporizer operation. Confirm appropriate pressure and stable delivery under load.
  5. Perform compression or leak-down test on cylinder 2 and compare to adjacent cylinders. Repair mechanical issues if compression is low.
  6. Check for intake or vacuum leaks near cylinder 2 (smoke test). Inspect EGR and intake manifold gasket sealing.
  7. Use a scope or scan tool to view coil and crank/cam sensor waveforms for timing issues or sensor errors.
  8. Inspect wiring and ECU connectors for corrosion, breaks, or intermittent connections related to injector or coil control circuits.
  9. If components swapped in step 3 cause the fault to move, replace the faulty coil or injector. If code stays on cylinder 2, focus on wiring, mechanical or fuel delivery to that cylinder.
  10. After repairs, erase codes and perform road test under conditions that originally set the code. Monitor misfire counters, fuel trims and related sensors to confirm repair.
  11. Safety note: Follow workshop safety procedures when working with high-voltage ignition components and pressurized fuel systems; depressurize fuel system before disconnecting components.

Likely causes

  • Ignition problem at cylinder 2 (coil, spark plug, connector)
  • Injector or alternative-fuel injector/solenoid fault for cylinder 2
  • Incorrect alternative-fuel pressure/regulator or supply problem
  • Mechanical low compression on cylinder 2 (valve, ring, head gasket)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
MIL on — misfire detected on cylinder 2 while running on alternative fuel. Freeze-frame and misfire counters stored; investigate ignition, injector/fuel supply, mechanical condition, and alternative-fuel system.
