Causes

  • Faulty valve deactivation solenoid/actuator for cylinder 12
  • Oil contamination, low oil level, or incorrect oil viscosity restricting hydraulic actuation
  • Clogged oil passages or filter carrying oil to the actuator
  • Faulty cam phaser or camshaft timing mechanism
  • Wiring harness damage, poor connector, or short to power/ground at the actuator
  • Sticking intake valve due to carbon build-up or mechanical damage

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Rough idle or vibration, especially at idle
  • Cylinder 12 misfire or misfire code(s) logged
  • Reduced engine power and poor throttle response
  • Decreased fuel economy
  • Intermittent or persistent limp-home behavior depending on severity

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and pending codes; note engine conditions when fault set
  • Scan live data for cylinder deactivation status, camshaft position, and commanded vs actual cam advance
  • Inspect engine oil level, condition, and service history (viscosity and change interval)
  • Visually inspect wiring and connectors at cylinder 12 actuator/solenoid and cam phaser
  • Check solenoid resistance and compare to manufacturer spec
  • Command actuator on/off with a capable scan tool and observe response

Signal parameters

  • Solenoid coil resistance (ohms) — compare to spec
  • Actuator command voltage/duty cycle from PCM (0–12 V PWM or duty %)
  • Measured current draw of actuator (amps) during activation
  • Camshaft position sensor waveform and phase (degrees of cam advance/retard)
  • Oil pressure (psi or bar) at idle and under load
  • Cylinder contribution / misfire counters for cylinder 12

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record all DTCs, freeze frame data, and live data. Confirm P34A3 is current or pending.
  2. Verify basic conditions: correct oil level and quality, battery voltage stable, and no recent oil change errors (wrong viscosity).
  3. Visually inspect wiring and connector for cylinder 12 actuator for corrosion, broken pins, or loose connection. Wiggle-test while monitoring live data for changes.
  4. With scan tool, command the cylinder 12 intake deactivation solenoid while watching PCM feedback and cam/cylinder behavior. Note response or lack thereof.
  5. Measure solenoid resistance and perform a bench power test (or apply fused 12 V) to confirm the solenoid actuates. Replace if inoperative or out of spec.
  6. Check oil pressure and inspect oil passages to the cam phaser/actuator for clogging. If low pressure, diagnose oil pump/relief, pick-up, or filter issues.
  7. Inspect camshaft phaser operation: verify cam timing is within spec using cam/crank correlation and scope or high-resolution data. Compare to known-good values.
  8. Perform compression and/or leak-down test on cylinder 12 to confirm valves and rings are mechanically sound. If mechanical failure is found, repair cylinder head/valve train.
  9. If wiring and components test good, consider PCM software update or reflash per manufacturer service bulletin before replacing major components.
  10. After repair, clear codes, perform a test drive under similar conditions to freeze frame, and re-scan to confirm the fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Failed or intermittent valve deactivation solenoid on cylinder 12
  • Dirty or collapsed oil passage feeding the cylinder deactivation circuit
  • Low engine oil level or old/incorrect oil causing slow actuator response
  • Cam phaser seized or leaking and not achieving commanded phase for intake
  • Broken/loose connector or high resistance in the solenoid control circuit

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Cylinder 12 intake valve deactivation/performance not within expected parameters. PCM detected incorrect response from the intake valve deactivation system or intake valve timing/actuation for cylinder 12.
