Causes

  • Faulty Suspension Control Module (SCM-A)
  • Power or ground loss to SCM-A (blown fuse, open circuit, poor ground)
  • Open, shorted or high-resistance wiring between SCM-A and CAN bus
  • Damaged or corroded connector at the SCM-A
  • CAN bus short to battery or ground or missing termination resistor
  • Other module on the network holding the bus dominant or flooding the bus

Symptoms

  • Suspension warning lamp or message in the instrument cluster
  • Reduced or altered suspension function (stiff or limp ride, inability to adjust ride height)
  • Other network warnings (ABS, stability, or traction control lights)
  • Stored U0132 and possibly other communication-related DTCs
  • Suspension settings inoperative or defaulted

What to check

  • Verify correct ignition state and attempt to communicate with SCM-A using a scan tool
  • Check for other related U0xxx codes that indicate broader bus issues
  • Visually inspect SCM-A connector and wiring for corrosion, damage or water
  • Verify 12V supply and ground at SCM-A with engine off and key on
  • Measure CAN_H and CAN_L voltages at the SCM-A connector and at other nodes
  • Check CAN bus termination resistance (≈60 ohm across CAN_H to CAN_L with power off)

Signal parameters

  • CAN bus idle voltages (approx): CAN_H ≈ 2.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 2.5 V (recessive state)
  • CAN bus dominant voltages (approx): CAN_H ≈ 3.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 1.5 V during activity
  • Terminal voltage to SCM-A: battery voltage (~12 V) on battery feed with ignition on
  • Ground continuity: module ground to chassis < 1 ohm
  • Termination resistance: ~60 ohms measured across CAN_H to CAN_L with power off (two 120 Ω in parallel)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Safety: Park vehicle on level surface, key off, wear PPE. Read and record freeze frame data and all stored DTCs with a scan tool.
  2. Attempt communication: With scan tool, try to establish a connection to the Suspension Control Module A. Note any error messages or inability to connect.
  3. Check related modules: Confirm other modules on the same CAN network are communicating (ECM, ABS, BCM). If none communicate, suspect bus-level issue.
  4. Visual inspection: Inspect SCM-A connector, harness, and nearby components for damage, corrosion, water intrusion, pin push-out or rodent damage.
  5. Power/ground verification: With key ON (engine off), backprobe test power and ground pins at the SCM-A connector. Verify proper voltage and good ground. Repair any open circuits or blown fuses.
  6. CAN voltages: With key ON, measure CAN_H and CAN_L at the SCM-A connector and at another known-good node. Compare to expected idle voltages and look for bus stuck dominant (one line held high/low) or missing activity.

  • Loose/corroded connector at the suspension module
  • Blown fuse or missing 12V ignition feed to SCM-A
  • Open or shorted CAN_H or CAN_L wiring near module
  • Failed SCM-A (internal electronics)
  • Faulty termination resistor or short caused by aftermarket accessory
