Causes

  • Open, short or high resistance in CAN/bus wiring between module and main gateway
  • Poor power or ground supply to the conduction level control module
  • Corroded/damaged connector or pin at the module or junctions
  • Failed conduction level control module (internal electronics)
  • Missing or incorrect termination resistor(s) on the CAN/CAN-FD network
  • Intermittent battery/low battery voltage or poor charging system

Symptoms

  • Ride height / conduction level features inoperative or stuck at default
  • Warning message(s) on dash relating to suspension/level control
  • Related systems reporting communication faults or degraded operation
  • ABS, traction or stability functions may show messages if networked
  • DTCs for other modules that require conduction level data
  • Intermittent operation of level control (works sometimes, then not)

What to check

  • Read and record all stored and pending U-codes and related P/C codes from all modules
  • Confirm battery voltage (12.6V+ at rest) and charging system operation
  • Check fuses and power relays for the conduction level control module circuit
  • Visually inspect module connector and harness for corrosion, bent pins, damage or water ingress
  • Inspect CAN wiring for chafing, pinch points, rodent damage, or recent repairs
  • Use a diagnostic tool to query the module; confirm module presence/address on the bus

Signal parameters

  • CAN bus idle voltages: ~2.5 V on each line (CAN_H and CAN_L)
  • Dominant state typical voltages: CAN_H ≈ 3.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 1.5 V (depends on vehicle bus type)
  • Termination: approx. 60 ohms across CAN_H and CAN_L (two 120Ω in parallel)
  • Expected module heartbeat/alive message frequency: often periodic (typical 1–20 Hz) — confirm with a capable scan tool
  • Module address/ID and message PGNs vary by model; use dealer/repair manual or diagnostic tool to list expected IDs

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Capture full symptom/code history from all modules and note when code was set (conditions).
  2. Verify stable battery/charging voltage. Clear codes and attempt to reproduce; check for return.
  3. Visually inspect module connector, harness and nearby components for damage or corrosion. Repair as required.
  4. Check fuses/relays that supply the module for continuity and proper operation.
  5. Use a capable scan tool to request the conduction level control module; note if it responds or is absent.
  6. If module absent, measure module power (B+) and ground pins at the connector with ignition on; compare to vehicle spec.
  7. Check CAN bus at the module: measure CAN_H and CAN_L idle voltages, check termination resistance across the two lines.
  8. Use an oscilloscope or high-speed scan tool to observe bus traffic and verify the module’s expected message IDs/heartbeat and to detect shorts/noise.
  9. Isolate segments if necessary (disconnect other modules or harness sections) to locate open/short/intermittent wiring.
  10. Repair identified wiring/connector faults. If wiring and supply are good but the module does not respond, consider reflashing software if available, then replace the module as a last step.
  11. After repairs, clear codes, perform any required initialization/calibration for the level control system, and road-test to confirm fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Loose, corroded or contaminated connector at the conduction level control module
  • Open or shorted CAN_H or CAN_L wiring (physical damage or chafing)
  • Module not receiving ignition-switched power or poor ground connection
  • Faulty module (electronics failure)
  • Failed bus termination (open/shorted resistor) or bridged wires
  • Battery voltage low at time of communication attempt or intermittent supply
