Lost communication with rear differential control module

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Open or shorted CAN bus wiring to the rear differential control module
  • Corroded, damaged or loose connector at the rear differential control module
  • Blown fuse or loss of power/ground to the rear diff module
  • Failed rear differential control module (hardware or internal software)
  • Faulty CAN bus termination or excessive bus resistance/noise
  • Intermittent wiring damage from chafing, water ingress, or body movement

Symptoms

  • Rear differential/4WD/AWD warning or fault message in instrument cluster
  • Reduced traction, limited 4WD engagement, or vehicle in limp/limited performance mode
  • ABS/traction control or stability warning lights may be illuminated
  • No live data or status messages available from rear differential module on a scan tool
  • Intermittent or permanent loss of certain drivetrain functions that depend on rear diff

What to check

  • Use a capable diagnostic scan tool and confirm U0136 and any related U-codes present
  • Check if the rear differential control module appears in the vehicle network list (module present/response)
  • Visually inspect the rear differential module connector and harness for corrosion, broken pins, water ingress, or physical damage
  • Check related fuses and main power/ground circuits for the rear differential module
  • Scan for other communication codes on the same CAN bus (indicates wider bus problem)
  • Backprobe module power and ground with key ON to confirm battery voltage and good ground

Signal parameters

  • Module supply (key ON): ~12 V (battery voltage) at module power pin; no-load difference >11 V indicates supply present
  • Module ground: near 0 V; excessive resistance/voltage drop can cause comm loss
  • CAN bus recessive state: CAN_H ≈ 2.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 2.5 V measured to chassis; differential ≈ 0 V
  • CAN bus dominant state: CAN_H ≈ 3.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 1.5 V (differential ~2.0 V) during traffic
  • Termination resistance between CAN_H and CAN_L (with ignition OFF and connectors disconnected as required): approx. 60 Ω (two 120 Ω in parallel) for a typical two-terminator network
  • Expected network behavior: periodic heartbeat/status messages from rear diff module when healthy — absence of its message ID indicates lost comm

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve freeze frame, live data and all stored codes. Note time stamps and any network-related codes alongside U0136.
  2. Check if other modules on the same CAN bus are reporting communication faults. If multiple modules are affected, suspect common bus power/termination/short.
  3. Perform a visual inspection of the rear differential module connector and wiring for damage, corrosion or water intrusion. Repair any obvious faults.
  4. Verify fuses and measure battery voltage at the module’s power pin with key ON. Confirm good ground at module mounting point and connector ground pin.
  5. With a DVOM, measure CAN_H and CAN_L voltages at the module connector with the ignition ON. Compare to expected signal_params. If voltages are abnormal, trace the wiring for opens/shorts.
  6. Measure termination resistance across CAN_H and CAN_L (follow manufacturer procedure: ignition OFF, isolate bus if needed). Replace missing/incorrect termination resistors or repair bus wiring.
  7. If voltages look correct but module does not respond, capture bus traffic with an oscilloscope or CAN bus analyzer to confirm whether the rear diff module transmits any frames. Look for noise, reflections or missing dominant/recessive transitions.
  8. Perform a wiggle test and move harness along routing while monitoring for intermittent changes in bus voltage or module presence. Repair chafed or intermittent wiring.
  9. If power, ground and bus signals are good but module still fails to communicate, consult manufacturer service info for possible software issues and perform module reflash or replacement as directed.
  10. After repairs, clear codes, confirm the module appears on the bus, verify live data and perform a driven functional check of drivetrain systems. Re-scan to ensure U0136 does not return.

Likely causes

  • Damaged or corroded connector at the rear differential module
  • Open/short on the local CAN high/low pair feeding the module
  • Loss of module supply voltage or ground (blown fuse, disconnected ground)
  • Module failure or internal software fault after a collision or water intrusion
