Lost communication with the restrictions control module

Causes

  • Open/shorted CAN bus wiring (CAN H/CAN L) or poor splices/repairs
  • Corroded, loose or damaged connector at Restrictions Control Module
  • Blown fuse or loss of module supply/ground
  • Module software/firmware mismatch or failed module
  • Other module on the network causing bus errors or heavy load
  • Intermittent wiring (chafing, water ingress) or poor body/chassis ground

Symptoms

  • MIL or instrument cluster warning related to restrictions control or communications
  • Specific functions controlled by the Restrictions Control Module are disabled or operate in a limited mode
  • Driver message like “Service Restrictions” or similar
  • Intermittent electrical faults or multiple modules reporting communication errors
  • Vehicle may enter limp or restricted performance depending on module role

What to check

  • Retrieve U0151 and all other stored/active DTCs from all networks using a capable OEM-level scanner
  • Check for related codes (other U-codes) indicating CAN bus or specific module faults
  • Visually inspect harness and connector at the Restrictions Control Module for corrosion, bent pins, water, or damage
  • Check fuses and power distribution for the module (vehicle battery positive feed and ignition-switched feed)
  • Verify chassis and module ground integrity (measure voltage drop or continuity)
  • Check CAN bus wiring continuity and look for obvious shorts to battery/ground

Signal parameters

  • Battery supply at module: ~11–14.5 V with key ON (measure at module connector)
  • Module ground: near 0 Ω continuity to chassis; voltage drop
  • CAN bus recessive voltages: CAN_H ≈ 2.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 2.5 V (both lines)
  • CAN bus dominant voltages: CAN_H ≈ 3.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 1.5 V (typical) — differential ~2 V when dominant
  • CAN bus termination: ≈ 60 Ω measured end-to-end across CAN_H and CAN_L
  • Bus error signs: high bus error counters, no module heartbeat or periodic messages observed on scan tool/scope

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect OEM-level diagnostic tool; read and record U0151 and any other present codes and freeze-frame data
  2. Check for multiple U-codes across different modules — if present, suspect shared bus issue
  3. Visually inspect module connector and harness; repair any corrosion, bent pins, or water ingress
  4. Check fuses and measure module supply voltage at the module connector with key ON; repair any feed faults
  5. Verify ground continuity from module to chassis/negative battery; clean/repair ground as necessary
  6. Using a DMM or scope, measure CAN_H and CAN_L voltages at the module with key ON and engine off; confirm recessive voltages ~2.5 V and correct differential during activity
  7. Measure termination resistance across CAN_H-L (≈60 Ω). If open or incorrect, trace/repair wiring and connectors
  8. If bus voltages abnormal, isolate segment by disconnecting branches or modules to find short or noisy node
  9. If wiring and power/ground check good and other nodes respond, perform module reflash/reprogram or attempt to re-initialize per manufacturer procedure
  10. If module still does not respond after power/ground, wiring and reflash verified, consider module replacement and program/configure replacement per manufacturer; clear codes and road-test to verify repair
  11. Document steps and results; do not replace modules without confirming wiring/power/ground and proper programming

Likely causes

  • Faulty or corroded connector/pins at the Restrictions Control Module
  • Loss of battery feed or ground to the module
  • CAN bus short to power or ground or high bus error rate from another node
  • Module internal failure or failed communications transceiver
  • Aftermarket accessory or recent repair disturbed the CAN network
