Lost Communication With Audible Alert Control Module

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Faulty Audible Alert Control Module (AACM)
  • Open/short/intermittent wiring or connector to the module
  • CAN bus or LIN bus fault (short to power/ground, high resistance, missing termination)
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay supplying module power
  • Poor battery voltage or poor ground at module
  • Intermittent network interference or noise

Symptoms

  • No chimes, beeps, or audible alerts (seatbelt, door ajar, key-in-ignition, etc.)
  • Horn or other audible functions inoperative (depending on vehicle wiring)
  • Related warning lights or multiple U0xxx/U1xxx network codes stored
  • Possible intermittent operation of alerts
  • Module not listed or shown as present in scan tool network status

What to check

  • Read all stored network and module DTCs with a professional scan tool; note freeze frame and occurrence frequency
  • Verify battery voltage (12.2–14.8 V) and test while cranking; check main and module-specific fuses
  • Visually inspect the Audible Alert Control Module connector(s) for corrosion, bent pins, water intrusion, or damage
  • Check module ground connection(s) for security and low resistance
  • Measure CANH and CANL (or LIN if applicable) at the module connector with key ON: confirm idle voltages and differential behavior
  • Check for bus termination (approx. 60 ohms across CANH–CANL) and for shorts to battery or ground

Signal parameters

  • CAN bus idle voltages: approximately 2.5 V on each line (recessive); dominant state: CANH ~3.5 V, CANL ~1.5 V
  • Bus termination: approx. 60 ohms between CANH and CANL (two 120Ω in parallel)
  • Expected message frequency: audible module heartbeat/messages typically repeated at low Hz (varies by model) — look for periodic frames from module or gateway
  • Fault symptom: no frames from the audible module or receiver timeouts from ECU/gateway
  • Check for error frames, high error counters, or bus overload/noise on oscilloscope

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify the customer complaint and note when U0160 was set (continuous, intermittent, after repair, after water exposure). Scan and record all U0xxx/U1xxx codes.
  2. Check battery voltage and condition. Verify and replace any blown fuses or faulty relays powering the audible module.
  3. Visually inspect the audible module connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, or water ingress; repair or reseal as needed.
  4. With key ON, use a scan tool to attempt communication with the audible module. If no response, check power and ground pins at the module connector for proper voltage and good ground.
  5. Backprobe the CANH/CANL (or LIN) pins at the module connector. Confirm idle voltages and use a scope or data logger to look for valid differential signals and periodic messages.
  6. If CAN signals are absent at the module but present elsewhere on the same network, inspect and test the module harness for open/short. Check continuity from module connector to the nearest splice/gateway.
  7. If CAN signals are abnormal on the network, isolate by disconnecting suspected modules or branches, re-check termination resistance and for shorts to battery/ground.
  8. Repair wiring, connectors, grounds, or replace blown fuses as required. Clear codes and attempt to communicate again.
  9. If wiring and bus are good but module remains unresponsive, consider replacing the Audible Alert Control Module and follow any manufacturer programming/relearning procedures.
  10. After repair, clear codes, verify restoration of audible functions, and perform a road or operational test to confirm the fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Loose, corroded or disconnected connector at the Audible Alert Control Module
  • Blown fuse or removed power/ground to the module
  • CAN bus shorted to battery or ground, or missing termination resistor
  • Failed Audible Alert Control Module
