Lost Communication With Lighting Control Module Rear

AI status

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Open or short in CAN/LIN wiring between BCM (or gateway) and rear lighting module
  • Corroded, loose or damaged connector at the rear lighting module or intermediate junctions
  • Blown fuse or lost power/ground to the rear lighting module
  • Missing or failed CAN/LIN termination resistor or bus wiring fault
  • Failed rear lighting control module or gateway/BCM communication port
  • Water intrusion or physical damage to rear harness or module

Symptoms

  • Rear tail/brake/turn lights, license or reverse lights may not operate or are intermittent
  • Instrument cluster or message center displays communication or lighting system warnings
  • Exterior lighting functions behave erratically (flicker, inoperative)
  • Related convenience features (trailer lights, adaptive lighting) may be unavailable
  • Stored U0183 and possibly other U-series communication codes

What to check

  • Use a capable diagnostic scan tool to read U0183 and any other U-codes; confirm module presence on network
  • Inspect wiring harnesses, connectors and grommets at rear lamps, liftgate/trunk hinge areas for damage or corrosion
  • Verify module supply voltage and ground at the rear lighting module connector (battery voltage and good ground)
  • Check fuses and fusible links for circuits feeding the rear lighting module and related modules
  • Check CAN/LIN bus for other communication errors and note which nodes are present/absent on the network
  • Measure CAN High and CAN Low voltages at a known-good junction and at the rear module connector (see signal params)

Signal parameters

  • High-speed CAN (if used): Recessive (idle) approx. CANH ≈ 2.5 V, CANL ≈ 2.5 V; Dominant approx. CANH ≈ 3.5 V, CANL ≈ 1.5 V; differential ≈ 2.0 V when dominant
  • Low-speed CAN or LIN (if used on some models): LIN idle pulled up to battery via resistor (~12 V); dominant state near 0 V
  • Typical network baud rates: HS-CAN often 500 kbps (verify vehicle-specific value in wiring diagram)
  • Expected termination: 60 ohms between CANH and CANL across the bus (two 120-ohm resistors in parallel)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect scan tool, record freeze frame and other U-codes. Note which modules are not responding.
  2. Attempt to communicate with rear lighting module via scan tool. If module not listed, confirm power and ground at module connector.
  3. Visually inspect connectors, pins and harness for corrosion, damage, or moisture—pay attention to liftgate/trunk hinge areas.
  4. Check fuses/power feeds for the rear lighting module and repair any open circuits. Verify good ground(s).
  5. Measure CANH and CANL (or LIN) voltages at a convenient harness splice and at the rear module connector with ignition ON. Compare to expected values.
  6. Check continuity and shorts: with ignition OFF, measure resistance between CANH and CANL, CAN lines to battery and ground to find shorts or opens. Verify termination resistance (~60 Ω).
  7. Perform a wiggle test of the rear harness and connectors while monitoring the bus for dropouts or code changes.
  8. If wiring and power/ground are good but no communication, attempt to swap with a known-good module (if available) or bench-test the module per manufacturer procedure.
  9. If replacement module is required, program/configure it per Hyundai service procedure and recheck network for faults.
  10. Clear codes and retest all lighting functions and communications; verify the issue does not reoccur under normal vehicle operation.

Likely causes

  • Corroded/moisture-damaged connector at rear tail lamp module
  • Broken/damaged wiring in trunk/liftgate area (pinched at hinge)
  • Faulty module ground or no battery feed due to blown fuse
  • Short to battery or ground on CAN high/low wires
  • Failed rear lighting module or failed BCM/gateway node
