Causes

What to check

  • Verify customer-reported symptoms and any recent repairs or battery disconnects
  • Scan vehicle for additional DTCs and note which modules report communication faults
  • Visually inspect connector and wiring to the entertainment receiver for damage, corrosion, or loose pins
  • Check fuses and power/ground at the receiver module
  • Verify bus voltage levels and physical continuity of communication lines
  • Confirm module part number and software level; check for required programming

Signal parameters

  • CAN bus: idle voltage ~2.5 V, CAN_H ~3.5 V during dominant, CAN_L ~1.5 V during dominant
  • LIN: pulled-up nominal voltage ~12 V or vehicle-specific; dominant low to ~0 V
  • Ethernet/MOST: link status (link/no-link) and physical layer link LEDs if present
  • Message rate: expected periodic heartbeat or diagnostic message frequency (varies by OEM)
  • Error counters: CAN bus error frames or bus-off occurrences
  • Wake/sleep requests: module should respond to wake-up frames on the network

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record all DTCs from all modules and clear codes to verify recurrence.
  2. Confirm whether the receiver module is listed/responding in the scan tool (module present on network).
  3. Verify power and ground at the receiver with a DVOM. Check fuses and battery feed when ignition is on and during cranking if applicable.
  4. Inspect the receiver connector for corrosion, bent pins, or poor mating. Wiggle test connectors while monitoring communication to check for intermittent faults.
  5. Using an oscilloscope or CAN bus tester, probe the communication lines at the receiver for proper differential signals, bus activity, and absence of excessive noise/shorts.
  6. If bus activity is absent at the receiver but present at other nodes, check continuity and resistance of the bus wiring to the receiver and any inline connectors or junctions.
  7. If the receiver shows no power or ground but wiring is intact, trace and test upstream power/ground circuits and fuses; repair as needed.
  8. If physical layer is good but no higher-layer messages from the receiver, attempt module reset/power-cycle and re-scan. Reprogram or reflash software if updates are available or if module was recently replaced.
  9. If multiple modules lose communication or bus errors persist, isolate by disconnecting suspected nodes one at a time per manufacturer procedures to find the faulting device.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and verify system function and that U0195 does not return during normal operation and key cycles.
