Lost Communication With “Door Switch A”
AI status
Completed
Completed
100%
Causes
- Open or shorted wiring between BCM (or gateway) and door module/switch
- Corroded, loose or damaged connectors at the door, BCM or gateway
- Failed door switch, door module (if separate), or BCM
- CAN bus short to battery or ground, or high resistance on CANH/CANL
- Missing/failed CAN termination resistor(s)
- Low battery/poor battery connections or blown fuse supplying modules
Symptoms
- Door open/closed indicator incorrect or not updating
- Interior lights, auto-lock/unlock or alarm may not respond properly
- Possible inability to lock/unlock door from switches
- Stored U0215 DTC and related communication warnings on scanner
- Possible other network DTCs if CAN integrity is compromised
What to check
- Scan all modules for U-codes and related DTCs to identify scope
- Verify battery voltage (12.6V nominal) and good battery connections
- Inspect fuses and relays supplying BCM, door module and sensors
- Visually inspect door harness at hinge for chafing, pinched wires, water intrusion
- Check connectors at door switch/door module and BCM for corrosion, bent pins or poor mating
- Use a scan tool to view live data for the door switch status and module presence
Signal parameters
- CAN bus idle voltages: CANH ≈ 2.5 V, CANL ≈ 2.5 V (both centered); dominant state ≈ CANH 3.5 V / CANL 1.5 V
- Differential voltage during activity: up to ≈ 2 V (dominant), near 0 V when recessive
- Typical automotive high-speed CAN baud rate: commonly 500 kb/s on body/gateway networks (verify vehicle spec)
- Termination present as two 120 Ω resistors in parallel ≈ 60 Ω between CANH and CANL
Diagnostic algorithm
- Read and record U0215 and any other related codes from all modules. Note freeze frame/live data.
- Clear codes and attempt to reproduce the fault while watching live data for Door Switch A and module presence.
- Visually inspect door harness at the B-pillar/hinge for damage; move door repeatedly to look for intermittent wiring faults.
- Inspect and disconnect the door switch and/or door module connector; check for corrosion, bent pins, water, and secure mating.
- With connectors disconnected, check for proper power and ground supply to the door module/switch circuit (verify voltage and ground continuity).
- Backprobing: measure CANH and CANL at the door module connector and at the BCM/gateway with key ON. Compare to signal parameter expectations.
- Measure resistance across CANH and CANL with power off to verify termination ≈ 60 Ω. Check for shorts to battery or ground.
- Wiggle test harness/connectors while monitoring communication/live data to find intermittent faults.
- If wiring and connectors are good but no communication from the door module, attempt to communicate directly with the door module using a capable scan tool. If module is non-responsive, consider module replacement or reflashing.
- If a module is replaced, reprogram/configure per manufacturer procedure and recheck entire network for additional faults.
- After repairs, clear DTCs and verify that Door Switch A reports correctly and the U0215 does not return under normal conditions.
Likely causes
- Broken or disconnected wiring in the door harness (common at hinge/door jamb)
- Corroded/loose connector at the door switch or door module
- Faulty door switch or door module
- CAN bus fault (short, open, poor termination) between modules
- Blown fuse or poor power/ground to the BCM or door module
