Lost Communication With “Door Switch E”

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Open or shorted wiring between Door Switch E and network/BCM
  • Corroded/damaged connector at door switch or BCM
  • Failed Door Switch module
  • Faulty Body Control Module (BCM) or gateway module
  • Blown fuse or poor battery/ground connection
  • Intermittent CAN/LIN bus fault (short to power/ground, high resistance)

Symptoms

  • DTC U0219 stored or MIL may be illuminated depending on vehicle strategy
  • Door lock/unlock, dome light, or keyless entry functions for that door may not work
  • Interior lights may behave intermittently for that door
  • Driver information may show door open/closed incorrectly
  • Possible multiple communication-related DTCs if bus fault is shared

What to check

  • Scan vehicle and record all U-codes and freeze frame data
  • Check battery voltage and main grounds (low voltage can cause bus issues)
  • Inspect fuses related to BCM/door modules
  • Visually inspect connector at Door Switch E and BCM for corrosion, bent pins, water intrusion or damage
  • With ignition on, observe CAN/LIN bus communication using a scan tool (bus active, message rates, nodes present)
  • Measure CAN high/CAN low idle voltages at a known good connector (approx. 2.5V each with ~2V differential) or LIN single-wire voltage when applicable

Signal parameters

  • Bus type: CAN or LIN depending on model/year (verify factory wiring diagram)
  • Message expected from Door Switch E: periodic status message at vehicle-specific rate (commonly 5–20 Hz)
  • CAN idle: CAN_H ≈ 2.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 2.5 V, differential ≈ 0 V at rest; active differential ≈ 2 V
  • LIN idle: single wire pulled to ~12 V or battery through pull-up; data is a serial low pulses (verify per vehicle)
  • Open/short thresholds: check factory service manual for exact voltage/resistance limits

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect an OEM-level scan tool. Read and record U0219 and any related codes; check freeze frame and current data.
  2. Attempt to communicate with Door Switch E module using the scan tool. Note if module is present or not responding.
  3. Inspect physical condition of the door switch connector and harness (especially at door hinge/boot). Repair corrosion or damage as found.
  4. Verify power and ground to the door switch module. Check fuses and measure voltages at the module connector with respect to chassis ground.
  5. Check CAN/LIN bus health: verify proper idle voltages, then view message traffic. If bus is silent or shows errors, isolate segments by disconnecting nodes one at a time per wiring diagram.
  6. Perform continuity and resistance checks between the BCM/gateway and door switch connector pins to find open or high-resistance wiring. Check for shorts to power or ground.
  7. If wiring and connectors are good, substitute/inspect the door switch module (if available) or test with a known-good module.
  8. If module substitution does not restore communication, test or replace BCM/gateway as last resort—confirm with manufacturer procedure for reprogramming or configuration after replacement.
  9. Clear codes and perform a functional test and road/door-cycle test to confirm issue is resolved. Re-scan for any returning codes.

Likely causes

  • Faulty or disconnected door switch connector (moisture/corrosion)
  • Broken wiring inside door harness (pinch point at hinge)
  • Door switch module internal failure
  • CAN/LIN bus short or open near the door circuit
  • BCM input circuit fault
