Lost Communication With “Door Window Motor B”

AI status

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Damaged/loose connector at the door window motor or door module
  • Broken, shorted or pinched wiring harness between the door and body control module (BCM)
  • Failed door window motor or internal motor controller
  • Blown fuse or poor power/ground to the motor/module
  • Corrosion or water ingress in the door harness or connector
  • CAN bus interruption (open, short to ground/Vbatt) or improper termination

Symptoms

  • One door window does not operate or operates intermittently
  • Related door/window functions (auto-up/down, anti-pinch) nonfunctional for that door
  • One or more network-related warnings or multiple U-codes on scan tool
  • No message/data from Door Window Motor B in vehicle network data stream
  • Possible clicking/relay noises or no noise from the motor when commanded

What to check

  • Record freeze frame and full scan of all modules; note related codes and module addresses
  • Visually inspect door seals, connectors and harness at the affected door for damage/corrosion
  • Check relevant fuses and relays (door/window circuits) for continuity and proper seating
  • Check battery voltage and grounds before performing network checks
  • With a scan tool, attempt to command the window and observe presence/absence of module responses
  • Probe CAN High/Low at an accessible gateway/BCM and at the door module connector (if accessible)

Signal parameters

  • CAN High and CAN Low voltages idle and dominant states at gateway/BCM and door module (compare to other doors)
  • Presence and frequency of expected network message ID for Door Window Motor B (model-specific — use factory data)
  • 12 V supply voltage to the motor/module with key on or during window operation
  • Ground continuity to chassis ground from the motor/module connector
  • Motor resistance (ohms) and operating/stall current draw compared to specification
  • Window position sensor or switch feedback voltages (if fitted)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify the code and capture any related U- or B-codes; note freeze-frame data.
  2. Check battery voltage and key fuses/relays for the power circuit feeding the door/window motor and door module; repair as needed.
  3. Visually inspect the door harness and connector for damage, corrosion, water entry or broken pins; repair or replace connectors/harness as required.
  4. Using a scan tool, observe the network for messages from the door module/motor. If no messages, compare to a working door module (message IDs, frequency).
  5. Probe CAN_H and CAN_L at a known good node and at the door module connector while operating the windows. Look for correct idle voltages and proper dominant/recessive transitions.
  6. Check power and ground at the door motor/module connector with key ON and while commanding the window. If power/ground missing, trace back to fuse/relay/BCM.
  7. Measure motor coil resistance and current draw while commanding the window (bench test or apply 12 V temporarily) to determine motor/driver failure.
  8. If wiring, power and CAN bus are good but no communication, consider replacing the door module or motor controller. If multiple modules show communication faults, diagnose CAN bus termination and BCM/gateway.
  9. After repairs, clear codes, redo functional tests and monitor for reoccurrence. Use road/test cycle to verify intermittent faults are resolved.

Likely causes

  • Connector wiring fault at the door (water, corrosion, chafing)
  • Power/ground supply missing to the motor or door module (blown fuse, poor contact)
  • Failed window motor or its integrated controller
  • Local CAN bus wiring issue between door module and BCM

Fault status

⚠️ Status
