Lost Communication With Heated Steering Wheel Module

Causes

  • Open or short in CAN bus wiring between HSWM and gateway/BCM
  • Faulty Heated Steering Wheel Module
  • Blown fuse or loss of power/ground to HSWM
  • Corroded/loose connector or damaged pins at module or gateway
  • Missing/failed CAN termination or excessive bus loading
  • Software/firmware mismatch or network configuration error

Symptoms

  • Heated steering wheel inoperative
  • Communication-related warning or message on cluster (module not responding)
  • One or more CAN-related U-codes stored
  • Intermittent or permanent loss of other functions that share the same network
  • Possible erratic behavior of related vehicle systems

What to check

  • Read all stored and pending DTCs from all modules; note related U- and B-codes
  • Confirm battery voltage is within normal range during testing
  • Visually inspect connectors, pins and wiring at steering column, HSWM and gateway/BCM
  • Check fuses/relays for the heated steering wheel circuit
  • Use scan tool to verify whether HSWM appears on the network and whether it responds to requests
  • Measure CANH and CANL voltages at the HSWM connector with key ON (see signal params)

Signal parameters

  • CAN bus recessive voltage: approximately 2.5 V on CANH and CANL
  • CAN bus dominant voltages: CANH ~3.5 V, CANL ~1.5 V (differential ≈ 2.0 V) during active frames
  • Network termination: about 60 ohms across CANH to CANL at key-off (two 120Ω in parallel)
  • Expected message: HSWM should transmit periodic status frames or respond to gateway requests (typical frequency: intermittent to several Hz when active)
  • Supply voltage to module: battery voltage (approx. 12 V) present at power pin with key on

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a full-function scan tool and read all control modules; record U0229 and any related codes.
  2. Verify the code is current (not intermittent or pending). Recreate condition with key cycles if necessary.
  3. Check vehicle battery voltage and engine off/key on voltage stability before continuing.
  4. Visually inspect connectors and wiring at the steering wheel/heated steering wheel module, steering column area and vehicle gateway/BCM for damage or corrosion.
  5. Check fuses/relays powering the heated steering wheel module; replace any blown fuses and retest.
  6. Use the scan tool to query the HSWM. If the module does not appear on the vehicle network, proceed to electrical tests.
  7. With key ON, measure power and ground at the HSWM connector. Repair any open power/ground circuits.
  8. Measure CANH and CANL at the module connector and at a known-good gateway/BCM CAN port: verify recessive/dominant voltages and differential during communication. If stuck high/low or open, trace wiring for short/open.
  9. Measure resistance between CANH and CANL with ignition off (expect ~60Ω across network). If out of range, locate missing/bad termination or short to ground/battery.
  10. If bus signals are present at the gateway but absent at the module, perform continuity checks of CAN wires and inspect intermediate connectors. Repair wiring or pins as required.
  11. After repair, clear codes and verify that HSWM communicates and that U0229 does not return. Cycle vehicle and perform a road/test function check of the heated steering wheel.
  12. If wiring and power/ground are good and the module still does not communicate, consider updating module software per OEM service procedure or replacing the HSWM only after confirming failure with a known-good/bench test or manufacturer guidance.

Likely causes

  • Damaged connector or wiring to the heated steering wheel module
  • No power or ground at the module (fuse/relay open or wiring fault)
  • CAN bus short to battery/ground or open circuit preventing message transmission
  • Failed heated steering wheel module
  • Fault in gateway/module that routes CAN messages
