Causes

  • Blown fuse or disabled power supply to the RCUM

What to check

  • Read all stored DTCs and freeze frame data from all modules with an OEM-capable scan tool
  • Check battery voltage and state of charge (12.4–12.8 V at rest; >12 V with key on)
  • Inspect fuses and relays supplying the RCUM
  • Visually inspect RCUM connector(s) and wiring for corrosion, bent pins, water ingress or damage
  • Perform a network node scan to confirm whether RCUM appears on the bus
  • Measure CAN/LIN idle voltages at the RCUM connector with key on and ignition off as appropriate

Signal parameters

  • Battery voltage (typical nominal 12–14.5 V during cranking/charging)
  • CAN_H idle voltage ≈ 2.5–3.5 V, CAN_L idle voltage ≈ 1.5–2.5 V (verify against service manual)
  • Differential CAN voltage idle ≈ 0 V; dominant state produces ≈2 V differential
  • Bus termination resistance ≈ 60 Ω (measure across CAN_H and CAN_L)
  • LIN line idle ≈ battery voltage or specified LIN idle per manufacturer (verify service doc)
  • Module presence/heartbeat messages frequency — compare to reference data in factory manual

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect an OEM-capable diagnostic tool and perform a full network scan; record U0248 and any other communication codes or missing nodes.
  2. Verify battery voltage and stable supply; charge or support battery if low before testing.
  3. Inspect fuses/relays for RCUM power circuit and test for continuity/power at the RCUM supply pin with ignition on.
  4. Visually inspect RCUM connector and wiring harness for damage, corrosion or moisture; repair or clean as needed.
  5. Measure CAN_H and CAN_L voltages at the RCUM connector with key on; compare to known-good values in the service manual.
  6. Check termination resistance across CAN_H and CAN_L with power off; look for open or incorrect termination values (~60 Ω).
  7. If wiring and network parameters are good, perform a wiggle/driveability test while monitoring live network traffic for intermittent faults.
  8. If the RCUM is not present on the bus but supply and ground are correct, try swapping a known-good module (if available) or bench-test the module per OEM procedure.
  9. Reflash or reprogram the RCUM if software corruption is suspected and re-code to vehicle configuration as required by manufacturer procedures.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and perform a functional test of remote/keyless functions and a fresh network scan; monitor for reappearance of U0248.
