Lost Communication With Side Obstacle Detection Control Module C

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Open, shorted or high-resistance wiring on communication bus (CAN/LIN) to the module
  • Faulty or intermittent connector at the module or intermediate splice
  • Module has no power or ground (low battery, blown fuse, corroded ground)
  • Failed or intermittent side obstacle detection control module C
  • Faulty bus termination or missing/shorted termination resistor
  • Network interference from aftermarket electronics or damaged wiring

Symptoms

  • Warning lamp or message for side obstacle detection or parking/assist systems
  • Loss of side obstacle detection function (no alerts or incorrect alerts)
  • Multiple network-related DTCs or communication errors in other modules
  • Intermittent operation of related safety/assistance features
  • Possible degraded performance of other systems sharing the same bus

What to check

  • Connect a capable scan tool and read all U-codes and related freeze frame data
  • Verify whether the module responds to a module present/ID request
  • Inspect fuses and measure module supply voltage with key in correct position
  • Visually inspect wiring harness, connectors and ground points for damage or corrosion
  • Measure continuity and resistance between module connector and gateway/ECU for CAN H, CAN L and power/ground
  • Check termination resistance across CAN H and CAN L (≈60 ohms total) with battery disconnected if required

Signal parameters

  • CAN recessive: CANH ≈ 2.5 V, CANL ≈ 2.5 V (both equal)
  • CAN dominant: CANH ≈ 3.5 V, CANL ≈ 1.5 V (differential ≈ 2 V)
  • Expected bus termination: approx. 60 ohms between CANH and CANL (two 120 Ω in parallel)
  • Common CAN data rates: 125 kb/s, 250 kb/s, 500 kb/s (verify vehicle-specific rate with scan tool)
  • LIN: idle ≈ Vbat (pulled high), dominant low pulses to ground (if vehicle uses LIN for that module)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Record the code and any accompanying DTCs or freeze frame data with a scan tool. Do not clear codes yet.
  2. Confirm whether the module appears in the scan tool module list (module present). If present, attempt a module wake and read its status.
  3. Inspect wiring and connectors at the side obstacle detection control module C for damage, corrosion or loose pins. Repair as needed.
  4. With ignition on, measure module supply voltage and ground integrity. Repair blown fuses or poor grounds before further testing.
  5. Check continuity of CAN H and CAN L between the module connector and vehicle gateway/ECU. Look for opens, shorts to battery or chassis ground.
  6. Measure CAN bus waveform with oscilloscope or CAN sniffer at the module connector and at the gateway. Verify expected recessive/dominant voltages, message traffic and absence of excessive noise.
  7. Measure termination resistance across CAN H and CAN L with power off. Confirm approx. 60 Ω. Repair missing/shorted terminators.
  8. If wiring and power/ground check good but no communication, attempt to reinitialize or re-flash the module software per manufacturer procedures (use OE scan tool).
  9. If module still does not communicate and wiring/power/termination are confirmed good, consider replacing the side obstacle detection control module C. Program and configure replacement as required.
  10. After repairs or module replacement, clear codes and confirm system operation and that no related U-codes return. Perform a road test if applicable.

Likely causes

  • Corroded connector pins at the module causing intermittent contact
  • Broken CAN high or CAN low conductor between module and main bus
  • Blown fuse or loss of module supply/ignition feed
  • Short to battery or ground on CAN or LIN wiring
  • Failed module processor or internal power regulator
  • Improper termination (open/missing 60 Ω across CAN H/L) or bus short
