Lost Communication With Camera Module Rear

AI status

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Rear camera module failure (internal electronics)
  • Open/shorted/damaged wiring or connector between camera and vehicle harness
  • Power supply problem to camera (blown fuse, relay, ignition-switched power open)
  • Bad ground at camera or associated module
  • CAN bus fault (short to power/ground, high resistance, missing termination)
  • Corrosion or water intrusion at camera connector (common on rear bumper cameras)

Symptoms

  • No rear camera image on display (black screen or 'camera unavailable')
  • Parking assist, backing guidelines, or surround view features disabled
  • One or more related warning messages or icons on dash or head unit
  • U0264 stored in vehicle network / body ECU(s); may be accompanied by other U-codes
  • Intermittent camera operation if harness/connector has poor contact

What to check

  • Read all DTCs from all modules to identify related communication or power codes
  • Visually inspect rear camera connector and harness for corrosion, damage, or water
  • Check relevant fuses/relays for camera power (owner manual or wiring diagram)
  • Verify battery/ignition voltage at camera power pin with harness connected
  • Verify good ground continuity from camera ground pin to chassis
  • Use scan tool to attempt communication with rear camera module and watch for heartbeat/packets

Signal parameters

  • Camera supply: ~11–14 V when ignition/accessory supply is ON (verify at camera power pin)
  • Ground: near 0 Ω to chassis; low resistance continuity expected
  • CAN bus nominal idle voltages: CAN_H ≈ 2.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 2.5 V (recessive). In dominant state CAN_H ≈ 3.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 1.5 V
  • CAN differential expected: ~0 V (recessive) and ~2.0 V (dominant). Check with a scope or CAN tester; avoid powering bus incorrectly
  • CAN termination: approx. 60 Ω measured across CAN_H and CAN_L at vehicle harness (two 120 Ω resistors in parallel)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Capture and record all DTCs and freeze-frame data from all modules using a factory-level or capable scan tool.
  2. Verify symptom: attempt to activate rear camera (shift to R or use display controls) while monitoring for image and module presence on the scan tool.
  3. Visually inspect rear camera connector, housing and harness for corrosion, pin damage, chafing or water intrusion; repair or clean as required.
  4. Check fuses/relays that supply camera power; replace if blown and inspect cause of fuse failure.
  5. With connector connected, measure camera power pin for battery/ignition voltage and verify ground continuity to chassis.
  6. Check CAN bus at camera connector or nearest access point: measure CAN_H and CAN_L idle voltages and compare to expected values; use scope or CAN analyzer to view frames and check for bus-off/errors.
  7. If CAN physical layer is good, use scan tool to attempt communication and view module presence. If module is not present but bus is healthy, suspect camera module failure.
  8. Inspect wiring continuity between camera and gateway/head unit for opens/shorts; repair any damaged wiring.
  9. If wiring and power are good and module still does not communicate, attempt software reflash or reprogramming per manufacturer procedures (some modules require dealer-level tools).
  10. If reflash fails or module remains unresponsive, replace camera module and verify repair. Recheck system for related DTCs and perform any required calibrations.

Likely causes

  • Damaged or corroded camera connector/harness at rear (water intrusion common)
  • No power or poor ground to the camera (blown fuse, harness damage)
  • Camera module hardware failure
  • CAN bus wiring fault or termination issue preventing communication
