Software Incompatibility with Throttle Actuator Control Module

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Incomplete or interrupted software update/flash of TACM or other control modules
  • Replacement TACM or ECM programmed with incorrect or mismatched software/calibration
  • Aftermarket ECU tuning or module reprogramming that changed CAN message formats
  • Corrupted firmware or data files in the TACM
  • Incompatible software versions between TACM and engine/vehicle control modules

Symptoms

  • MIL/Check Engine lamp illuminated
  • Reduced engine power or limp mode (limited throttle response)
  • Poor or delayed throttle response, hesitation or surging
  • Loss of communication messages with TACM reported by scan tool
  • Vehicle may fail to enter proper throttle control or require throttle relearn/calibration

What to check

  • Read all stored DTCs from all modules (not just engine) and save freeze frame data
  • Record TACM and engine/PCM software/part numbers and software version IDs using a dealer-level scan tool
  • Check for recent repair history: module replacement, reprogramming, or aftermarket tuning
  • Verify battery voltage is stable and within specification during scanning/programming (typically >12.6V)
  • Visually inspect TACM connectors and CAN bus wiring for damage, corrosion, or loose pins
  • Scan CAN bus for related communication codes (U0100, U0140, U0401, etc.) and CAN error counters

Signal parameters

  • TACM software part number and calibration ID (CID)
  • Engine/PCM software part number and calibration ID
  • Throttle position sensor (TPS) actual and requested values
  • Accelerator pedal position (APP) sensor values and correlation to TPS
  • CAN bus error/frame counters and bus voltage
  • Module response to UDS/OBD service requests (ID, software version)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable OEM or dealer-level scan tool and record all U-codes and freeze frame data from TACM, ECM/PCM and related modules
  2. Confirm battery voltage and charging system are within acceptable limits before any reprogramming
  3. Check vehicle service history for recent module replacements or software updates; ask owner about aftermarket tuning
  4. Compare TACM and ECM software/part numbers and calibration IDs for compatibility using OEM documentation or dealer tool
  5. Inspect TACM connector and wiring harness for damage, corrosion, poor contacts; repair any faults and recheck
  6. If software versions are mismatched or flagged as incompatible, perform recommended reflash/update of TACM and/or ECM using OEM reprogramming procedures and the correct calibration files
  7. After reflash, perform any required adaptations or throttle relearn procedures specified by the manufacturer
  8. Clear DTCs and perform a road test to verify resolution; rescan for persistent or returning faults
  9. If reprogramming fails or fault persists after confirmed compatible software levels, escalate to module replacement per OEM guidance and verify new module is programmed with correct software and VIN alignment
  10. If unable to resolve, consult manufacturer technical service bulletins (TSBs) or dealer engineering for known software incompatibilities

Likely causes

  • Recent software update, reflash or module replacement without proper matching of software levels
  • Aftermarket tuning or modifications to engine management software
  • Interrupted programming event (power loss during reflash) leading to partial/corrupt flash
  • Wrong part number module installed (dealer vs aftermarket)
  • ECU/PCM software version incompatible with TACM firmware

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Software incompatibility detected between TACM and other vehicle modules — TACM firmware or calibration does not match expected network/software levels.
