Software Incompatibility with Tire Pressure Monitor Module

Page language: EN

Causes

  • TPMS module firmware version not compatible with vehicle ECU software
  • Aftermarket or incorrect replacement TPMS module installed
  • Incomplete or interrupted TPMS software update / reflash
  • Module programmed with wrong regional or vehicle variant software
  • Corrupted module software or configuration data
  • CAN / LIN network communication errors masking as software mismatch

Symptoms

  • TPMS warning lamp or message on cluster
  • TPMS system not recognizing sensor IDs or unable to complete sensor relearn
  • Intermittent or permanent loss of TPMS data on cluster or diagnostic tool
  • Related communication DTCs (other U‑codes) present
  • No effect on engine drivability (electrical/communication fault only)

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and full U/C/B code set with a capable OEM diagnostic tool
  • Check TPMS module part number and software/firmware version against OEM compatibility table
  • Inspect connectors, power and ground at the TPMS module and vehicle ground points
  • Verify recent service history for TPMS or ECU/module replacement or software updates
  • Scan vehicle network for CAN/LIN errors or BUS OFF conditions
  • Attempt simple relearn of TPMS sensors to confirm behaviour

Signal parameters

  • TPMS module supply voltage (battery feed) and ground integrity
  • CAN bus voltage and message traffic on TPMS related CAN IDs
  • TPMS module software/firmware version (SW/Cal ID)
  • TPMS sensor ID list and sensor report frequency
  • Network error counters (CAN error frames, BUS OFF status)
  • DTC timestamp and occurrence history (per ignition cycle)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect OEM diagnostic scan tool and read all stored and pending U/C codes; record freeze frame and module status.
  2. Review recent maintenance history for module replacement or ECU software updates that could have introduced a mismatch.
  3. Inspect TPMS module connectors and wiring for damage or poor connections; verify module supply voltage and ground.
  4. Check CAN/LIN bus health — ensure normal bus voltages and message traffic; resolve bus errors before module reprogramming.
  5. Identify TPMS module part number and current software/firmware version. Compare to OEM compatibility list for the vehicle VIN and market.
  6. If firmware mismatch suspected, attempt to reprogram/update TPMS module using the correct OEM software and approved procedure. Ensure stable power and do not interrupt the update.
  7. After successful reflash, clear DTCs and perform TPMS sensor relearn/initialization per OEM procedure. Verify sensors report and warning clears.
  8. If reflash is not possible or fails, replace TPMS module with the correct OEM part and program it with matching software, then repeat relearn and verification.
  9. If CAN/network faults persist, diagnose and repair wiring, connectors, or gateway/ECU issues before repeating software work.
  10. Document findings, software versions before/after, and confirm code does not return after road test.

Likely causes

  • TPMS module replaced recently with non‑OEM or wrong part number
  • Vehicle received an ECU/BCM software update and TPMS module firmware was not updated to the matching version
  • Update attempt failed or was interrupted, leaving module in incompatible state
  • Module programmed with software for different model year/market

Fault status

⚠️ Status
