Causes

  • HVAC control module sending corrupted or out-of-range messages
  • HVAC module internal fault (processor, memory, input circuitry)
  • Intermittent or open/shorted CAN bus wiring between HVAC and gateway/BCM/ECM
  • Poor power or ground to the HVAC control module
  • Software mismatch or failed module reflash/programming
  • Failed gateway, body control module (BCM) or other network node misinterpreting HVAC messages

Symptoms

  • HVAC controls unresponsive or erratic (modes, blower, temperature)
  • Inoperative climate functions (no A/C or blower control)
  • Illuminated warning lights or message on dash related to HVAC
  • Multiple network-related fault codes present
  • Intermittent operation of HVAC features

What to check

  • Read all stored and pending DTCs from HVAC, BCM/gateway and powertrain modules
  • Capture live CAN data while operating HVAC controls (scan tool capable of viewing HVAC messages)
  • Inspect HVAC module power and ground circuits for correct voltage and good grounds
  • Visually inspect harness and connectors at HVAC module for corrosion, loose pins, damaged wires, water ingress
  • Check battery voltage and charging system during diagnosis (ensure stable supply)
  • Look for related network codes (U0401, U0415, U0416, U0420 etc.) to identify network-wide issues

Signal parameters

  • HVAC CAN message fields — selected temperature setpoint
  • HVAC CAN message fields — blower speed/level
  • HVAC CAN message fields — mode/vent selection and A/C on request
  • Node presence/heartbeat on vehicle CAN (module message IDs and periodicity)
  • CAN bus voltage levels: CAN_H and CAN_L differential (~2.5V idle)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect OEM-level diagnostic tool and record U0424 plus any related U-codes and freeze-frame data
  2. Verify battery voltage is within specification (typically >12.4 V) and secure battery terminals
  3. Check for other module faults (BCM, gateway, PCM). If multiple nodes show communication errors, suspect bus/power/ground or gateway
  4. View live CAN traffic while operating HVAC controls. Confirm HVAC module transmits expected messages (temperature, blower, mode) and observe message timing and data ranges
  5. If HVAC messages are absent or invalid, inspect HVAC connector pins for corrosion, bent pins, or loose terminals. Wiggle-test wiring while watching live data for intermittent faults
  6. Measure CAN bus physical layer: confirm CAN_H and CAN_L idle voltages, check for short to battery/ground or other voltage source
  7. Check power and ground at HVAC module (voltage with key on, good ground resistance to chassis)
  8. If wiring and power/ground are good but messages remain invalid, attempt module soft reset/reboot from scan tool and clear codes; re-test
  9. If code returns and software levels are suspect, check software/calibration levels and reflash or program HVAC module per dealer procedure
  10. If a known-good replacement HVAC module is available, substitute and retest; follow correct programming and immobilizer/security procedures
  11. If replacement module cures issue, perform final system test and clear codes. If problem persists, investigate BCM/gateway or specialist network diagnosis

Likely causes

  • HVAC module internal failure
  • CAN high/low wiring fault or poor connector/corrosion
  • Low battery or unstable supply to HVAC module during communication
  • Failed or incompatible module programming after replacement or update
  • Other network node (BCM/gateway) fault corrupting or dropping messages
