Invalid Data Received From Serial Data Gateway Module E

Causes

  • Faulty Serial Data Gateway Module E (firmware, processor, or internal bus interface)
  • Corrupted or out-of-spec messages from another module on the network
  • Open, shorted, or intermittent wiring/connectors on the vehicle communication bus (CAN/LIN/other)
  • Poor or missing ground or supply voltage to gateway or related modules
  • Failed or incorrect module programming/calibration (mismatched software versions)
  • Excessive bus electrical noise or improper termination

Symptoms

  • One or more networked modules showing communication-related faults or loss of features
  • Warning lights or messages for systems that rely on bus messages (may be intermittent)
  • Certain functions intermittent or nonfunctional (dependent on messages managed by Gateway E)
  • Stored U-codes or other communication-related DTCs
  • No immediate engine performance change unless affected module controls engine functions

What to check

  • Use a scan tool to read all stored U-codes and P/C/B/U codes across modules
  • Record freeze frame and occurrence count for U0451
  • Check for related codes that identify the source module or bus (e.g., U0100, U0073, U0144)
  • Visually inspect gateway connectors and harness for damage, corrosion, or bent pins
  • Verify battery voltage and ground integrity at gateway and affected modules
  • Wiggle harnesses while monitoring for code set or message errors to find intermittent faults

Signal parameters

  • CAN bus nominal recessive voltage ~2.5 V on CAN_H and CAN_L together; dominant differential ~2 V (CAN_H ≈ 3.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 1.5 V)
  • Bus idle voltages should be stable and symmetric; excessive deviation indicates transceiver or wiring issue
  • Message frequency (Hz) and message ID — verify expected message IDs from Gateway E appear at normal rates
  • Message DLC (data length code) must match expected length for each message ID
  • Checksum/CRC or sequence counters within the message payload must validate if used by the protocol
  • Termination resistance ~60 Ω (two 120 Ω resistors in parallel) across CAN_H and CAN_L at key points

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable scanner and capture all U-codes and live network data. Note occurrence and freeze frame.
  2. Identify other active communication fault codes and which bus (CAN, LIN, etc.) is indicated. Prioritize resolving bus-wide failures first.
  3. Visually inspect connectors and wiring to Serial Data Gateway Module E for damage, corrosion, or poor connections. Repair any issues.
  4. Verify supply voltage and ground at the gateway with the key on/engine off and during operation. Compare to specification. Repair poor power/ground connections.
  5. With the scan tool monitoring messages, perform a wiggle test of related wiring and connectors to reproduce the fault and localize an intermittent connector/wire failure.
  6. Use an oscilloscope or CAN/LIN sniffer to capture the physical bus waveform at the gateway connector: check for correct voltages, excessive noise, missing bit patterns, invalid frames, or bus overload. Verify termination resistance ~60 Ω across CAN_H/CAN_L.
  7. If a specific node is sending malformed messages, identify the module by message ID and inspect/replace that node or reprogram as needed.
  8. Check software/firmware/calibration levels for the gateway and communicating modules; reflash/update to correct, compatible versions if required.
  9. After repairs or reprogramming, clear codes and perform a functional test/drive cycle to confirm the U0451 does not return.
  10. If all wiring, power/ground, and other modules check good and invalid messages persist specifically from the gateway, consider replacing Serial Data Gateway Module E following manufacturer diagnostic confirmation.

Likely causes

  • Intermittent connector or wiring fault at gateway module or adjacent harness
  • Gateway module receiving messages with wrong length/DLC or bad checksum from a misbehaving node
  • Bad power/ground to the gateway causing transient corrupt messages
  • Aftermarket device or recent module replacement introducing incompatible messages or bus loading
  • Failed gateway module or damaged transceiver
