Causes

  • Faulty Restraints System Sensor F (internal failure)
  • Damaged, corroded or disconnected wiring or connector at the sensor
  • Poor ground or lost sensor supply voltage
  • Intermittent or failed CAN/LIN bus communication
  • Faulty SRS control module or related module receiving the data
  • Water intrusion or physical damage to sensor/harness

Symptoms

  • SRS/airbag warning lamp illuminated on dash
  • Passenger airbag status indicator may be incorrect or disabled
  • Loss of occupant detection or seatbelt pretensioner functions related to that sensor
  • Possible stored SRS-related fault codes and inability to clear until fault corrected
  • Occasional or permanent disablement of associated restraint functions

What to check

  • Read and record all stored DTCs and freeze frame data with a capable scan tool
  • Inspect sensor connector and wiring for corrosion, damage, bent pins, water ingress or loose terminals
  • Visually inspect harness routing for chafing, pinches, or recent service disturbances (seats, consoles)
  • Verify battery voltage and good chassis/engine grounds
  • Check for related U-codes on the CAN bus (indicates broader communication issues)
  • Perform wiggle test of harness while monitoring live data for intermittent changes

Signal parameters

  • CAN High / CAN Low idle voltage ≈ 2.5 V (each), differential idle ≈ 0 V; expected recessive ~2.5V
  • Bus termination resistance ≈ 60 Ω (two 120 Ω resistors in parallel)
  • Message frequency: dependent on vehicle — typically 1–100 Hz for sensor messages (verify with service data)
  • Sensor supply voltage: battery voltage (11–14 V) or regulated reference (check service manual)
  • Ground continuity to sensor < 1 Ω
  • Presence of the sensor message/ID on the bus and valid checksum/CRC (use CAN bus scanner/oscilloscope)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect an OBD-II scan tool with SRS capabilities; record U0476 and any other codes and freeze frame data.
  2. Clear codes and attempt to reproduce: observe whether U0476 returns and under what conditions (ignition on, engine cranking, seat movement).
  3. Visually inspect the sensor and connector: look for corrosion, bent pins, water, or signs of impact. Repair or reseal connector if needed.
  4. With ignition off, disconnect the sensor and inspect connector pins; reconnect firmly and ensure locking tab engaged.
  5. With ignition on, measure sensor supply and ground at the connector (compare to spec). If supply/ground are out of range, trace and repair wiring/grounds.
  6. Monitor CAN High/Low at the sensor harness with a scope or multimeter; verify ~2.5 V idle and presence of data pulses. Check bus termination resistance. Repair any short/open or poor termination.
  7. If wiring and bus are good, substitute a known-good sensor (if available) or bench-test sensor per service manual procedures.
  8. If a replacement sensor clears the code, re-initialize or perform any required SRS calibration/registration per manufacturer instructions.
  9. If fault persists with known-good sensor and wiring verified, suspect SRS control module. Consult technical service bulletins and consider module programming or replacement by a qualified technician.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and perform SRS system self-tests and a road/functional check to confirm correct operation.

Likely causes

  • Damaged wiring or connector at sensor
  • Failed or degraded sensor (internal fault)
  • Open/short on CAN data lines or poor termination
  • Corroded ground or supply to the sensor
