Causes

  • Faulty Digital Audio Control Module A (hardware or firmware)
  • CAN/LIN bus wiring open, shorted or high resistance
  • Poor power or ground to the audio module
  • Intermittent connector corrosion, loose pins or broken terminal
  • Bus termination or wiring short to battery/ground
  • Software mismatch or corrupted module calibration

Symptoms

  • Audio/infotainment unit inoperative or intermittent
  • Stereo or media functions unavailable or showing errors
  • Related modules show communication-related DTCs
  • Possible warning or malfunction indicator on dash
  • Features that rely on audio module (Bluetooth, navigation voice) not working

What to check

  • Read stored and pending DTCs and freeze frame with a capable scan tool; note timestamps
  • Attempt to communicate with Digital Audio Control Module A via diagnostic tool
  • Check for other U0xxx codes that indicate a wider network issue
  • Visually inspect audio module connector(s) for corrosion, bent pins, or water intrusion
  • Verify module supply voltage and ground circuits at the connector (battery voltage, clean ground)
  • Measure CAN bus voltages at the module connector (CAN_H and CAN_L) with key ON, engine OFF

Signal parameters

  • Idle CAN voltages: CAN_H ≈ 2.5–3.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 1.5–2.5 V (each measured to chassis ground)
  • Dominant bus differential voltage ≈ 1.5–2.5 V (CAN_H > CAN_L) during activity
  • Termination resistance ~60 ohms measured across CAN_H and CAN_L with power off
  • Expected module supply ≈ battery voltage (12 V nominal) with ignition ON
  • Ground resistance should be low (

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Use a factory-level scan tool to confirm U0494 present and check for related U-codes. Record freeze frame and module responses.
  2. Attempt to communicate directly with the audio module. If no communication, verify fuse(s) feeding the module.
  3. Inspect the audio module connector for damage and proper seating; unplug/replug to clean contacts if needed.
  4. Verify power and ground at the module connector with a digital multimeter (key ON). Repair any power/ground faults.
  5. Measure CAN_H and CAN_L at the module connector with ignition ON. Compare to expected signal parameters. Look for shorts to battery or ground.
  6. Check termination resistance across CAN_H and CAN_L (~60 ohms) with power off. If not ~60 ohms, trace wiring/terminators.
  7. Backprobe and monitor CAN signals with an oscilloscope while operating the network to look for noise, missing messages, or corrupted frames.
  8. If wiring and bus behavior are good and the module still sends invalid data, check for available TSBs/software updates and reflash the module per manufacturer procedure.
  9. If reflashing fails or diagnosis points to internal module fault, replace the Digital Audio Control Module A and perform required programming/pairing and afterward clear codes and verify repairs.
  10. After repair, clear codes and perform a road or function test to ensure code does not return and related systems function normally.

Likely causes

  • Loose/corroded connector at the digital audio module
  • Loss of module power/ground causing garbled messages
  • Damaged CANH/CANL wiring (pin chafing, short to Vb/GND)
  • Module software fault needing reflash or replacement

Fault status

⚠️ Status
