Causes
- Faulty Digital Audio Control Module B (hardware or firmware)
- Corrupt or out-of-date module software
- Intermittent or failed CAN/LIN network connection between modules
- Open/shorted wiring, damaged connector or poor pin contact
- Improper module addressing or configuration (e.g., after replacement)
- Aftermarket audio equipment or improper installation causing bus conflicts
Symptoms
- Audio system features intermittently fail or are not available
- Radio, media source, volume, or source selection unresponsive
- Warning or message on cluster indicating audio or communication fault
- Multiple related U-codes or communication errors logged
- Loss of steering wheel audio controls or phone/media functions
- Intermittent system behavior correlated with vibration or connector movement
What to check
- Read all stored and pending DTCs from all modules; note freeze frame and occurrence counts
- Check for related U-codes (other modules reporting invalid data or lost comms)
- Visually inspect audio module connector, pins, and harness for damage, corrosion or water intrusion
- Verify module power and ground voltages with key on and during operation
- Inspect fuses and accessory relays supplying the audio module
- Check for aftermarket audio components and verify integration wiring
Signal parameters
- Message ID(s) used by Digital Audio Control Module B
- Payload/data byte layout (e.g., source ID, volume, status flags)
- Message frequency/update rate (Hz) and expected timing intervals
- Message length (DLC) and expected values/ranges for each field
- Checksum or CRC presence and correctness (if used)
- CAN bus voltage idle levels and differential voltages
Diagnostic algorithm
- Capture and record DTCs from all modules and note freeze frame data; do not clear yet.
- Confirm occurrence: attempt to reproduce the fault by exercising audio functions and repeating the conditions in freeze frame.
- Inspect connectors and wiring at Digital Audio Control Module B for damage, corrosion, or loose pins; repair as needed.
- Verify module battery power and ground reference voltages with DMM; repair any power or ground issues.
- Check fuses and relays feeding the audio module; replace if blown or intermittent.
- Use a scan tool to observe the audio module messages on the vehicle network. Confirm message IDs, DLC and data contents match expected values from factory data.
- If available, use an oscilloscope to view CAN high/low waveforms at the audio module and another known-good node to detect noise, reflections, or malformed frames.
- Check for shorts on CAN high/low to battery or ground and measure bus termination resistance (should be ~60 ohms across CAN high/low with ignition off unless otherwise specified).
- Inspect for and remove/disable any aftermarket audio devices; retest for fault presence.
- Verify module software/calibration level against manufacturer specification and apply any required updates or reflash the module per factory procedure.
- If wiring, power and software are confirmed good and the module still sends invalid data, replace the Digital Audio Control Module B (replace last).
- After repair, clear codes and perform a full system check to ensure no related U-codes return and all audio functions operate normally.
Likely causes
- Loose or corroded connector at the audio module
- CAN high/low short or short to battery/ground on audio module circuit
- Audio module firmware mismatch after software update or part replacement
- Defective audio module that sends malformed messages
- Failed power/ground supply to the audio module
Fault status
Status
Invalid data was received from the Digital Audio Control Module B over the vehicle network. Messages from that module were malformed, out of range, or failed integrity checks, causing communication errors with other modules.
Repair difficulty: Medium
Diagnostic time: 1.5 - 3.0 hours
