Invalid Data Received From Moveable Roof Control Module

Causes

  • Faulty Moveable Roof Control Module (MRM)
  • Poor or corroded connector(s) at MRM or associated modules
  • Damaged or shorted CAN wiring (CAN High/CAN Low) between MRM and body network
  • Open power or ground feed to the MRM
  • Failed/misconfigured gateway or body control module relaying messages
  • Bus termination fault (missing/failed termination resistor)

Symptoms

  • Stored U0508 DTC and/or lamp/message related to roof/system communications
  • Sunroof/convertible roof inoperative or stuck in a default/partially open position
  • Inability to operate roof from switches or remote
  • Other modules reporting communication-related DTCs (multiple U-codes)
  • Intermittent operation of roof functions or unusual behavior (random opens/closes)

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and full DTC list with a diagnostic scanner; note time/conditions of code set
  • Confirm presence of the Moveable Roof Control Module on the network using scan tool (module ID/response)
  • Check battery voltage (should be 12.6V+ at rest, >12V while cranking)
  • Visually inspect fuses and relays for the roof circuit and body control power feeds
  • Inspect connectors and wiring at the Moveable Roof Control Module and nearby harness routing for damage, corrosion, or pin push-out
  • Check for other U-codes that indicate a wider CAN bus issue

Signal parameters

  • Typical CAN bus idle voltages: CAN_H ≈ 2.5 V (nominal), CAN_L ≈ 2.5 V (nominal)
  • Dominant state voltages (active): CAN_H ≈ 3.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 1.5 V (differential ≈ 2.0 V)
  • Allowed idle tolerance: CAN_H/CAN_L ~2.5 V ±0.5 V (verify with vehicle spec)
  • Bus termination resistance: approximately 60 ohms between CAN_H and CAN_L (two 120Ω in parallel)
  • Data rates vary by network — common body CAN rates: 125 kb/s, 250 kb/s or 500 kb/s; confirm vehicle network speed before advanced troubleshooting

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify code and freeze-frame data with a capable OEM-level scanner. Note whether code is current or historical.
  2. Clear codes, operate the roof through all functions, and observe whether U0508 returns and under what conditions.
  3. Check battery state and supply to roof module; inspect associated fuses/relays and verify ignition-switched and constant power where applicable.
  4. Use scan tool to poll the Moveable Roof Control Module; confirm module presence and message IDs on the bus. Compare to other modules’ ability to communicate.
  5. Visually inspect and probe the module connector(s): check for bent/broken pins, corrosion, and secure mating. Repair as needed.
  6. With ignition on, measure CAN_H and CAN_L at the module connector and a known-good gateway/module: verify idle voltages (~2.5V each) and that dominant states occur during traffic.
  7. Measure termination resistance between CAN_H and CAN_L with battery disconnected: ~60Ω expected. Check for shorts to battery or ground on each CAN line.
  8. If communication is intermittent, perform a wiggle test while monitoring live CAN traffic and code status to locate a flex/short area.
  9. If wiring and power/ground are good but module does not respond or sends invalid data, check for software/coding updates or configuration errors per Hyundai service information.
  10. Replace the Moveable Roof Control Module only after confirming wiring/power/ground/CAN integrity. Program/configure the replacement module per manufacturer procedures and verify operation; clear codes and retest.

Likely causes

  • Corroded connector or pin at the Moveable Roof Control Module
  • Open or short in CAN High/CAN Low wiring near the roof harness
  • Loss of power or ground to the roof control module
  • Intermittent communication caused by damaged harness where it flexes (door/joint areas)
  • Failed Moveable Roof Control Module
