Causes

What to check

  • Check MCM power (battery/ignition) fuse(s) and test for proper Vbatt and ground at module connector
  • Measure CANH/CANL voltage at the MCM connector with ignition ON (compare to known-good values)
  • Wiggle-test wiring while monitoring for code changes to locate intermittent faults

Signal parameters

  • CAN bus idle voltages: CANH ≈ 2.5 V, CANL ≈ 2.5 V; dominant bits: CANH ≈ 3.5 V, CANL ≈ 1.5 V

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a bi-directional manufacturer-level scan tool. Read and record U0514 and all related U-codes and freeze frame data.
  2. Clear codes. Attempt to reproduce the concern (operate mirror functions, cycle ignition, move door harness) while watching for reappearance.
  3. Verify power and ground at the mirror control module connector: measure battery voltage at Vbatt pin and check ground continuity to battery negative.
  4. Inspect mirror connector, wiring through door hinge/boot and harness for physical damage, chafing, corrosion, or pin push-out. Repair any faults.
  5. With ignition ON, backprobe CANH and CANL at the MCM connector. Confirm proper idle voltages and message activity using a scan tool or oscilloscope. Compare with a known-good reference if available.
  6. If CAN bus levels are abnormal, isolate by disconnecting the mirror module and checking bus behavior (do other nodes communicate normally?). Repair short or open conditions and restore proper termination.
  7. If wiring and bus are good but module does not respond or transmits invalid data, try reprogramming/reflashing the mirror control module per manufacturer procedure. Ensure correct calibration and software version.
  8. If reprogramming fails or module still communicates incorrectly, replace the mirror control module. After replacement, perform module initialization, coding, and function tests.
  9. After repairs, clear DTCs and verify that the code does not return after normal vehicle operation and several key cycles.
