Causes

  • Open or shorted wiring between the door window motor and control module

What to check

  • Backprobe the window motor connector while operating the switch to verify supply voltage, ground, and control signals
  • Use a scan tool to observe live data for window motor status, position, and any LIN/CAN communication messages

Signal parameters

  • Supply voltage: near battery voltage (~12 V) at motor connector when commanded (vehicle-specific)
  • Control signal: PWM or switched control from BCM or door module; duty cycle varies with command (verify with service data)
  • Ground continuity: low resistance path to chassis ground
  • Motor current: low at no load, rises under load — compare with manufacturer specification
  • Network status: LIN/CAN messages present and within expected timing/IDs when monitoring with scan tool

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all stored DTCs and live data with a capable scan tool. Note related network codes.
  2. Attempt to reproduce fault while monitoring live data for motor status and communication errors.
  3. Visually inspect harness, connectors, and motor for damage or corrosion; repair any obvious issues.
  4. Check fuses and measure battery voltage at rest and during operation.
  5. Backprobe motor connector during operation: verify battery supply present when commanded, control signal behavior, and ground continuity.
  6. Measure motor current while operating the window to detect binding or shorted windings. If current is abnormally high, inspect regulator/mechanism for mechanical binding.
  7. If wiring and power/ground are good, try commanding the motor from the scan tool to isolate switch versus motor/regulator issue.
  8. Inspect and test the door module/BCM communication bus (CAN/LIN) for errors. Repair bus faults before replacing motors or modules.
  9. If motor wiring and regulator are good but invalid data persists, consider replacing the window motor assembly. If DTC still returns, suspect BCM or door module fault — verify with module bench test or replacement per manufacturer procedures.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and verify proper operation and that code does not return. Follow vehicle-specific relearn or programming procedures if a module was replaced.
