Causes

What to check

  • Verify module power and ground with a DVOM at the module connector (battery voltage and good ground)
  • Inspect CAN-H and CAN-L wiring for chafing, breaks, or pinched sections; check cable routing and shields
  • Use an oscilloscope or CAN data logger to view CAN bus activity and verify message IDs, frequency and signal integrity

Signal parameters

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable scan tool and read all stored and pending DTCs. Note related communication or parking-sensor codes and freeze-frame data.
  2. Clear codes and attempt to re-create the fault by cycling ignition and exercising the parking assist function. Note whether U0544 returns and under what conditions.
  3. If the code returns, inspect the Parking Assist Control Module B connector and harness for corrosion, bent pins, water ingress, or damage. Repair any obvious issues.
  4. Verify module supply circuits: measure battery/ignition voltage at the module power pin and check ground continuity to chassis. Repair poor power/ground before deeper diagnostics.
  5. Check CAN bus status: use a scope or data logger to confirm CAN_H/CAN_L signaling, correct idle voltages, differential voltage when active, and presence of expected IDs from Parking Assist Control Module B.
  6. If CAN frames from the module are missing, intermittent, or corrupted, trace wiring back toward the gateway and other nodes; look for shorts to power/ground or damaged shielding and repair as needed.
  7. If the wiring and power/ground are good but invalid data persists, check for software/calibration updates for the Parking Assist Control Module B and related gateway modules; re-flash or update per manufacturer procedure.
  8. If updates do not resolve the issue and the module cannot communicate correctly or continues to send invalid data, consider module replacement. Reprogram/reinitialize replacement module per service instructions.
  9. After repairs, clear codes, perform any required relearn or initialization procedures for the parking assist system, and verify proper operation over a test drive or repeated function tests.
