Causes

What to check

  • Read all stored and pending U-codes from all modules with a capable scan tool
  • Verify software part numbers and calibration IDs for the seat module and gateway
  • Inspect seat module connectors and harness for damage, corrosion or loose pins
  • Check vehicle battery voltage and ground connections while reproducing fault
  • Monitor CAN bus traffic with a capable tool or oscilloscope for errors, missing messages, or corrupt frames
  • Check termination resistances across CAN_H and CAN_L (typical ~60 ohms total)

Signal parameters

  • CAN message ID used by Seat Control Module (manufacturer-specific ID)
  • DLC (data length) and expected payload structure for seat messages
  • Message cycle time / frequency (expected message rate)
  • Counter or rolling code field (if used) and expected increment pattern
  • Checksum or CRC field value and validation results
  • Bus voltage levels and waveform integrity on CAN_H and CAN_L

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Capture all related DTCs and freeze frame data from all modules; note occurrence conditions.
  2. Verify vehicle battery condition and secure all ground points to rule out supply issues.
  3. Inspect and wiggle-test seat module connectors, harness, and nearby wiring for mechanical faults.
  4. Use a CAN bus analyzer or oscilloscope to observe the seat module’s message ID, payload, timing, and signal quality; compare to expected parameters.
  5. Check termination resistance and watch for excessive jitter, reflections, or noise on the bus.
  6. Confirm software/calibration versions for the seat module and gateway; reflash/update or reprogram per service information if mismatched.
  7. If messages are corrupt or absent but wiring and power are good, isolate the seat module (disconnect and observe bus behavior) to see if errors stop.
  8. Replace module only after confirming failure with bench testing or manufacturer guidance; follow programming/coding procedure for replacement.
  9. After repair/action, clear codes and test to verify no reoccurrence under normal vehicle operation.
