Invalid Data Received From Remote Start Module

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Remote start module internal fault or corrupted firmware
  • Incorrect or incomplete module programming/coding
  • Damaged wiring harness to the remote start module (opens, shorts, chafing)
  • Poor or intermittent power or ground at the remote start module
  • CAN/LIN bus communication errors (short to battery/ground, open, missing termination)
  • Connector corrosion, bent pins or poor pin contact

Symptoms

  • Remote start function does not operate or operates intermittently
  • U0555 stored in the vehicle's network control module(s)
  • Other modules report related communication errors or degraded features
  • No remote start status on dash or incorrect status shown
  • Possible warning lamps or messages related to remote start or immobilizer

What to check

  • Read all network codes with a bi-directional scan tool; note other U-codes or module faults
  • Confirm vehicle battery voltage is within specification (approx. 12.4–12.8 V at rest)
  • Inspect remote start module connector for corrosion, bent pins, or water intrusion
  • Check power and ground circuits at the remote start module for good continuity and voltage
  • Verify the remote start module is present and recognized by the scan tool (module ID and software version)
  • Inspect CAN and LIN wiring for damage, chafing or aftermarket splice taps

Signal parameters

  • CAN bus idle voltages (recessive): approx. CAN_H ≈ 2.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 2.5 V (verify against service manual)
  • CAN bus dominant levels: CAN_H ≈ 3.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 1.5 V during dominant bits (typical)
  • Typical high-speed CAN baud rates: 250 kbps or 500 kbps (confirm for vehicle model)
  • Expected termination resistance across CAN_H and CAN_L: ~60 Ω (two 120 Ω resistors in parallel)
  • Module supply voltage: battery voltage present at power pin (check vehicle spec)
  • Module ground: near 0.0 V with good continuity to chassis ground

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a dealer-level or full-function scan tool. Read and record all stored and pending codes and freeze-frame data from all modules.
  2. Verify battery state-of-charge and charging system health; restore battery if low and retest.
  3. Attempt to reproduce the fault while monitoring network traffic and remote start module status with the scan tool.
  4. Visually inspect the remote start module and related connectors for damage, corrosion, moisture or rodent damage. Repair or replace damaged connectors/wiring.
  5. Check module power and ground: backprobe power and ground pins with ignition on; confirm proper voltages and continuity to battery/chassis.
  6. Verify the remote start module is detected by the network and check its software/calibration ID. Compare against factory data or TSBs; reprogram/update if required.
  7. Measure CAN_H and CAN_L at the remote start module with a DMM (for idle voltages) and oscilloscope (for signal integrity). Look for missing frames, dominant stuck, or excessive noise.
  8. Measure termination resistance across CAN_H and CAN_L with battery disconnected; expect ~60 Ω. Repair any opens/shorts.
  9. If wiring and bus are good but module still sends invalid data, try replacing or bench-testing the remote start module following manufacturer procedures.
  10. After repairs or replacement, clear codes, perform relearns or module programming as required, and road test to verify the fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Faulty remote start module or module firmware bug
  • Loose, corroded or damaged connector at the remote start module
  • Loss of proper power or ground to the module
  • CAN bus wiring fault (short to ground or open)
  • Module configuration or software mismatch after servicing

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Communication error: invalid or corrupted data received from the remote start module. Verify module power/ground, connectors, network integrity, and software version before replacing components.
