What to check

  • Read all current and historic DTCs and freeze frame with manufacturer scan tool; note related U or B codes
  • Visually inspect amplifier connectors and harness for corrosion, water intrusion, damaged pins, or bent terminals
  • Check amplifier power and ground circuits for proper voltage and good ground with key ON and engine OFF
  • Use scan tool to monitor live data from amplifier and head unit; verify messages and parameter values
  • Check CAN bus health: measure CANH/CANL idle voltages, check for expected differential voltage, and inspect termination resistances (~60 Ω total)
  • Inspect for other module communication errors that could indicate a bus-wide fault

Signal parameters

  • CAN bus message presence: periodic audio/amplifier messages should appear on vehicle CAN (IDs vary by model)
  • CAN idle voltages: CANH ≈ 2.5–3.5 V, CANL ≈ 1.5–2.5 V (nominal idle ~2.5 V each)
  • Dominant differential voltage on CAN when active ≈ 1.5–3.0 V (bus dependent)
  • Termination resistance between CANH and CANL ≈ 60 Ω (two 120 Ω in parallel)
  • Power supply: accessory/battery voltage at amplifier 11–14.5 V depending on condition
  • Ground resistance should be low (

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect OEM-level scan tool. Read and record U0563 and any related codes; clear codes and attempt to re-create. 2) Visually inspect amplifier B connector and wiring for corrosion, damage, or moisture; repair any issues found. 3) Verify power and ground at amplifier connector with key ON; repair blown fuses, open feeds, or poor grounds. 4) Check CAN bus traffic: use scan tool or CAN bus analyzer/oscilloscope to confirm amplifier messages appear and are valid. Verify CANH/CANL idle voltages and differential levels. 5) Measure termination resistance across CANH/CANL near amplifier and head unit (~60 Ω); repair missing/incorrect termination. 6) Perform wiggle test on harnesses and connectors while monitoring live data to find intermittent faults. 7) If wiring and bus are good, check software/calibration levels for amplifier and head unit; reprogram or update per dealer procedures. 8) If the amplifier remains unresponsive or outputs invalid data after harness and software checks, consider replacing amplifier module B and re-check for recurrence. 9) After repairs, clear codes and road-test to confirm the fault does not return.
