Causes

  • Faulty radiator anti-tamper device (module or sensor)
  • Damaged, corroded or loose connector at the device
  • Broken, shorted or intermittent wiring on the CAN/data lines
  • CAN bus voltage problems (low battery, poor ground, high resistance)
  • Water intrusion or physical damage to device or connector
  • Software mismatch or module needing reflash/update

Symptoms

  • DTC U0587 stored in one or more control modules
  • Warning or message on instrument cluster related to cooling or anti-tamper system (manufacturer dependent)
  • Related features that rely on the radiator device may be inoperative or behave erratically
  • Possible cooling system or fan control anomalies if the device provides critical input
  • Intermittent drivability or network-related warnings if bus errors escalate

What to check

  • Read all stored codes and freeze frame data from all networked modules
  • Check battery voltage and main ground points; ensure stable 12V supply
  • Inspect the radiator anti-tamper device connector and wiring for corrosion, damage, or loose terminals
  • Perform a physical inspection for water intrusion or impact damage near the device
  • Use a scan tool to monitor CAN bus traffic and confirm message IDs, frequency and error counters
  • Wiggle test wiring/connectors while monitoring for fault appearance/disappearance

Signal parameters

  • CAN bus voltage (nominal ~2.5V idle, differential between CAN-H and CAN-L)
  • Presence and frequency of device message ID on the CAN bus
  • Message payload consistency, message counter, and checksum values (if available)
  • Bus error counts (tx/rx error counters) and node-offline indicators
  • Supply voltage to device and ground integrity

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Record all DTCs and freeze frame data from all modules. Note when the fault first occurred and any related events (water exposure, recent repairs).
  2. Verify battery voltage and chassis/engine grounds. Low or intermittent voltage can corrupt messages.
  3. Visually inspect the radiator anti-tamper device, connector and harness for corrosion, bent pins, damage, or moisture. Repair or replace damaged connectors.
  4. With a capable scan tool, monitor the CAN bus. Confirm the radiator device message appears and check payloads, message counters and error rates. Identify if messages are malformed or absent.
  5. Perform a wiggle test of the wiring and connector while monitoring bus traffic and DTC status; note any intermittent behavior.
  6. If wiring and connectors check good, confirm supply voltage and ground at the device connector with a DVOM or scope. Repair supply/ground faults.
  7. If device messages are missing or invalid after wiring and power confirmed good, consider replacing the radiator anti-tamper device or module.
  8. After repair or replacement, clear codes and road/test while monitoring for recurrence. If codes return, capture bus logs and escalate to manufacturer data/technical service for module-level diagnostics or software updates.

Likely causes

  • Connector corrosion or water-damaged plug at the radiator device
  • Open/short on CAN high or CAN low between device and network
  • Failed radiator anti-tamper device electronics
  • Battery/ground issue causing corrupted messages
  • Module software or configuration error after service or replacement
