Causes

  • Faulty Gear Shift Module B (internal failure)
  • Open/shorted/damaged wiring or connector to Gear Shift Module B
  • Poor or intermittent power or ground to the module
  • CAN bus wiring fault, short to battery/ground, or high resistance
  • Missing or incorrect module software/calibration (mismatch after module replacement or update)
  • Failed or weak vehicle battery/charging system causing data corruption

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or warning message on cluster
  • Gear selection indicator incorrect or not updating
  • Transmission may go into fail-safe/limp mode or refuse to shift correctly
  • Shifter may be unresponsive or exhibit unexpected behavior
  • Multiple network communication related warning messages
  • Possible loss of features tied to the gear shift module (e.g., park/shift interlocks)

What to check

  • Read all stored and pending codes and freeze frame data; note related network codes
  • Attempt communication with Gear Shift Module B using OEM scan tool
  • Check battery voltage and charging system (key on/engine off and during cranking)
  • Visually inspect connectors and wiring to the gear shift module for corrosion, bent pins, or damage
  • Backprobe module power and ground pins with key on — verify solid battery power and good ground
  • Measure CAN high/low voltages at the module with key on (engine off) and with engine running if required

Signal parameters

  • CAN bus idle voltages (approx): CAN H ≈ 2.5 V, CAN L ≈ 2.5 V (recessive); dominant state: CAN H ≈ 3.5 V, CAN L ≈ 1.5 V — verify against OEM specs
  • Differential voltage during dominant bit ≈ 2.0 V (approximate)
  • Termination resistance: ~60 ohms between CAN H and CAN L (two 120Ω in parallel) — confirm per vehicle spec
  • Expected message types from gear shift module: gear position, shift request, status/health messages — use OEM data stream to confirm valid payloads
  • Message frequency and IDs: check OEM documentation or OEM scan tool for expected message IDs and update rates

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve full DTC list and freeze frame; record other U-codes or related modules reporting faults.
  2. Clear codes and attempt to reproduce; note whether U0592 returns immediately or only under certain conditions.
  3. With OEM scan tool, attempt to communicate and read live data from Gear Shift Module B. If no response, confirm module presence on bus.
  4. Verify module power and ground pins for proper voltage and continuity to battery and chassis ground.
  5. Inspect connector for corrosion, damaged pins, or water intrusion; repair or replace connector if required.
  6. Backprobe CAN H and CAN L at the module and at a known-good network point; compare voltages and waveforms. Use oscilloscope if available to view message integrity.
  7. Measure termination resistance across CAN H and CAN L with ignition off; look for shorts to battery or ground on each CAN line.
  8. If wiring is intact, try swapping with a known-good gear shift module (if available) or substitute another labeled module as per OEM procedures to isolate module failure.
  9. If a replacement module is fitted, ensure correct part number and perform required programming/coding/update using OEM tool.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and test drive to confirm fault does not recur; monitor live data for dropped or corrupted messages.
  11. If intermittent or complex network faults persist, consult manufacturer technical service bulletins (TSBs) and consider gateway/module firmware updates.

Likely causes

  • Corroded/loose connector at Gear Shift Module B
  • Failed internal electronics in Gear Shift Module B
  • CAN bus fault between module and central gateway/head unit
  • Module programmed with wrong calibration or incompatible software
  • Intermittent power/ground to the module (voltage dip or poor ground)
