Causes

  • Debris, dirt, sticky residue or liquid contamination under button caps
  • Worn or broken switch mechanism (contact, spring, dome)
  • Corroded or damaged switch contacts or PCB
  • Damaged wiring harness or connector (short to ground or Vb)
  • Faulty central control panel module or button assembly
  • Software/firmware glitch or incorrect calibration

Symptoms

  • One or more central control panel buttons appear permanently active or send repeated inputs
  • Controls are unresponsive or operate intermittently
  • Unexpected actions from HVAC/infotainment/vehicle functions tied to the panel
  • Related warning lights or communication-related DTCs present
  • Erratic or continuous input shown in live data for affected key

What to check

  • Read and record all stored DTCs and freeze-frame data with a scanner
  • Identify which specific key(s) are reported or behaving abnormally
  • Visual inspection of central control panel for contamination, damage, or loose trim
  • Operate the suspected key(s) by hand to check for abnormal feel or sticking
  • Inspect wiring harness and connector for corrosion, bent pins, or water ingress
  • Check live data / input status for the key(s) while pressing and releasing

Signal parameters

  • Typical switch signal: discrete digital input (open/closed). Expected behavior: idle stable state, single transition per press.
  • Voltage: logic level referenced to vehicle ground; commonly 0 V (ground) or battery/ pull‑up voltage (approx. 5 V or 12 V depending on design).
  • Continuity: closed switch = near 0 Ω continuity between contact terminals; open = infinite/very high resistance.
  • Bad/stuck condition: constant closed (continuous low/high), rapid bouncing (contact chatter), or intermittent open/short.
  • When available, check CAN or serial input messages for repeated/continuous button events instead of single transitions.

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Safety: park vehicle, ignition OFF. Follow manufacturer procedures for airbag/trim removal if needed; disconnect battery if required before panel removal.
  2. Scan and document U1045 plus any related codes. Note freeze frame and live-data entries for the affected key(s).
  3. Reproduce the symptom with scanner connected: observe live input state while pressing/releasing affected button(s). Confirm whether input is stuck or erratic.
  4. Visually inspect panel area for spilled liquids, sticky residue, or foreign objects. Clean accessible surfaces with appropriate electronic-safe cleaner if contamination is present and retest.
  5. With ignition ON, backprobe the switch connector and measure voltage/continuity while operating the button. Compare to expected digital behavior (switch open vs closed).
  6. If input remains active with the connector disconnected from the module, suspect wiring short. If input stops when connector is disconnected, suspect switch/module.
  7. Wiggle test wiring and connectors while monitoring the input for intermittent changes. Repair/replace damaged wiring or connectors as required.
  8. If switch mechanics appear worn or cleaning did not help, remove the central control panel and inspect the switch/dome contacts and PCB. Replace the damaged button assembly or entire panel module if necessary.
  9. If hardware checks good, check for software updates, relearn/calibration procedures, or module reflash from dealer/technical service information and perform as recommended.
  10. After repair, clear DTCs, verify proper operation in live data and confirm the code does not return under normal use.

Likely causes

  • Contamination (dirt, spill) causing button to stick
  • Mechanical failure of the switch (worn dome/return spring)
  • Failed or corroded contact on the panel PCB
  • Intermittent/shorted connector or harness to the control module
