Causes

  • Open, short or high-resistance on the SCP (J1850) communication wiring
  • Faulty ignition switch or ignition switch harness/connectors
  • Intermittent or low battery/ignition supply voltage to modules
  • Corroded or loose connectors at modules or junctions
  • Failure of one or more network modules (BCM, IPC, ECM, PDM, etc.)
  • Software/firmware issue in a module

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or warning messages related to communications
  • Intermittent or complete no-crank/no-start condition
  • Accessories or instrument cluster not showing correct key position
  • Other network-related DTCs present (U-codes)
  • Inoperative or erratic operation of systems that rely on ignition-state info

What to check

  • Scan for stored and pending U-codes and related freeze frame data; note any other network codes
  • Confirm battery state-of-charge and system voltage with key in OFF and RUN positions
  • Visually inspect wiring and connectors for damage, corrosion, or loose pins at ignition switch and network modules
  • Backprobe the ignition-status conductor at the ignition switch and at affected modules; verify expected state changes when turning the key
  • Use a lab scope or diagnostic tool to monitor SCP/J1850 network signal for missing/garbled messages or excessive noise
  • Check fuses and power/ground circuits for modules on the SCP bus

Signal parameters

  • Ignition-status message expected on SCP/J1850 when key changes between Off/ACC/Run/Crank
  • Message should change state promptly (within a few hundred milliseconds) after key action
  • Network message frequency and duty/format conforming to vehicle's J1850/SCP protocol (use OEM specs for exact timing)
  • No persistent high-voltage spikes, excessive baseline noise, or bus short to power/ground on the communication line
  • Multiple nodes should acknowledge or respond to ignition state change on the network

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all U-codes and note freeze frame and conditions when U1135 set. Check for related DTCs (modules that report loss of ignition status).
  2. Charge or verify battery voltage (12.4 V+). Clear codes and attempt to reproduce while monitoring live data for ignition-state and communications.
  3. Inspect ignition switch connector and harness for pin damage, corrosion, or disconnection. Repair any physical damage.
  4. Backprobe ignition-switch output and the SCP/J1850 line at an affected module. Verify the ignition-state signal changes with key and that the network shows corresponding messages.
  5. Use an oscilloscope or compatible scan tool to view the SCP/J1850 waveform. Look for missing messages, abnormal levels, excessive noise, or bus contention. If bus faults found, trace to nearest connector/module and repair/replace wiring as needed.
  6. Check power and ground integrity at modules on the network (BCM, IPC, PCM, PDM etc.). Repair poor grounds, replace blown fuses or damaged power feeds.
  7. If a single module fails to transmit ignition status or corrupts the bus, isolate by disconnecting suspected module(s) (one at a time) while monitoring the bus to observe change. Replace only after confirming module fault.
  8. After repairs, clear codes, perform a full network scan, and cycle ignition several times to confirm the fault does not return. Reprogram modules if required by OEM procedure.

Likely causes

  • Damaged or disconnected ignition-switch to network wiring
  • Faulty ignition switch not producing the ignition-state signal
  • Module on the SCP bus (BCM/IPL/PCM) has failed or lost power
  • Blown fuse or poor battery/ground connection causing intermittent message loss
  • Corroded connector at a network junction or module

Fault status

⚠️ Status
