Causes

  • Unplugged or corroded fan connector
  • Open or shorted wiring between ECU/module and fan/relay
  • Blown fuse or failed fan relay
  • Failed fan motor or fan resistor/regulator/module
  • Faulty fan control module or engine control module (ECM)
  • Incorrect coolant temperature or ambient sensor input (ECM didn't command due to false temp reading)

Symptoms

  • Radiator/condenser fan does not run when A/C on or when engine is hot
  • Engine overheating or higher-than-normal operating temperature
  • Reduced A/C performance (insufficient condenser airflow)
  • DTC U1139 stored; possible accompanying fan-related P-codes
  • Fans may run intermittently or only at certain speeds

What to check

  • Read stored codes and freeze-frame data; note conditions when U1139 set
  • Visually inspect fan connectors, wiring harness, and grounds for damage, corrosion, or disconnection
  • Check fuses and fan relay operation (relay click when commanded)
  • Use a scan tool to command the fan ON and observe if there is a response
  • Measure voltage at the fan motor connector while commanding fan ON
  • Apply fused 12 V directly to the fan motor to verify motor operation (bench test)

Signal parameters

  • Battery supply to fan: ~12 V (should be present at relay output / fan connector when commanded)
  • Control signal from ECM/module: switched 12 V or low-side ground activation depending on architecture
  • Relay coil supply: 12 V with ground activation when commanded by control module
  • Fan motor resistance: typically low ohms (varies by motor) — expect measurable continuity, not open
  • Fan motor current draw: often in the single-digit to tens of amperes (check factory spec)
  • Ground continuity from fan negative terminal to chassis:

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve U1139 and related codes with a scan tool; record engine temperature and vehicle conditions when code set.
  2. Visually inspect fan, connector, wiring, and grounds for damage, corrosion, looseness, or overheating.
  3. Check fuses and fan relay; swap relay with a known-good identical relay if available and retest.
  4. With ignition ON or engine running (as safe/required), use a scan tool to command the fan ON. Observe relay operation and voltage at the fan connector.
  5. Probe the fan connector: check for battery voltage on the supply pin and the presence/absence of the control signal when fan is commanded. Do not short pins.
  6. If no control signal present, trace wiring back to the fan control module/ECM and check continuity and grounds. Repair any open/shorts.
  7. If control signal is present but fan does not run, apply fused 12 V directly to the fan motor to verify motor operation. Replace motor if it fails to run or draws excessive current.
  8. If motor runs but only intermittently or at incorrect speed, inspect fan resistor/regulator or fan control module and replace as required.
  9. After repairs, clear codes, perform functional tests (A/C on, warm engine), and road test to confirm the fan operates under correct conditions and U1139 does not reset.
  10. If all hardware checks OK and fan still not commanded, inspect ECM/BCM firmware, network communications, and replace module only after verifying all wiring and external components.

Likely causes

  • Loose/disconnected fan connector or broken wire at the harness
  • Failed fan motor (stator/brushes or bearings seized)
  • Bad fan relay or blown fuse
  • Open/short in control wiring between fan and ECM/module
  • Faulty fan control module or incorrect ECM command

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Fan operation error — fan expected to run but no rotation detected when commanded. Indicates possible open/unplugged connector, blown fuse/relay, failed motor, or wiring/ECU fault.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
