Causes

  • Faulty control module LIN transceiver or internal electronics
  • Damaged, corroded or loose LIN10 wiring or connectors
  • Short to battery, short to ground or open on the LIN10 single-wire bus
  • Poor battery voltage or intermittent power/ground to modules on the LIN10 network
  • Software/firmware fault or configuration mismatch in a network module
  • Multiple modules on the LIN10 bus causing bus contention or loading issues

Symptoms

  • MIL or network warning lamp illuminated
  • One or more body functions controlled over LIN10 are non-functional or intermittent (lighting, switches, sensors)
  • Related modules report lost communication or other U-codes
  • Erratic behavior of LIN-networked features (flicker, delay, unresponsive)

What to check

  • Read all stored and pending DTCs from all modules and note freeze frame/occurrence counts
  • Check vehicle battery state of charge and charging system voltage; verify stable 12 V supply
  • Visually inspect LIN10 wiring harness, pins and connectors for corrosion, damage, bent pins or water ingress
  • Check grounds and power feeds for the affected module(s) for resistance and proper clamp/connection
  • Disconnect and re-seat connectors on the affected module and adjacent modules on LIN10
  • Use a scope or dedicated LIN bus tool to verify LIN signal activity, voltage levels and waveform integrity on the LIN10 wire while commanding communication

Signal parameters

  • LIN bus idle voltage: typically pulled high to battery voltage via pull-up (approx. 9–12 V depending on Vb)
  • Dominant state: low pulse during LIN frame (transmission by master/slave)
  • Bus speed: LIN standard low-speed serial (commonly 1–20 kbps depending on implementation)
  • Look for valid frame timing, correct break/synch bytes and absence of continuous low (short) or floating (open) line

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve full DTC lists from all modules and confirm U114149 is current and note related LIN/CAN codes.
  2. Verify good battery voltage and stabilize power (min 12.4 V) before further testing.
  3. Perform visual inspection of LIN10 harness and connectors at the affected module and along the bus for mechanical damage or corrosion.
  4. Check module power and ground circuits with a DMM; measure voltage at module connector with key on and engine off and under cranking where applicable.
  5. Backprobe the LIN10 wire. With a scope or LIN diagnostic tool, verify presence of normal LIN frames and correct idle voltage. Look for shorts (line stuck low) or open (no waveform) conditions.
  6. If the LIN line is shorted or open, isolate segments by disconnecting individual slave modules one at a time to find the faulty node.
  7. If the LIN line is present and other modules communicate, suspect internal failure of the module that reported U114149—attempt software/firmware update or reprogramming per factory procedure.
  8. If reprogramming does not clear the fault, replace the affected control module. After repair, clear codes and perform full system communication check and function test.
  9. Document findings and verify all LIN-networked functions operate normally before returning vehicle to service.

Likely causes

  • Failed LIN transceiver inside the affected Volvo control module
  • Corroded/damaged connector or pin on LIN10 wiring harness
  • Shorted LIN10 wire to chassis ground or to 12 V due to abrasion
  • Low or intermittent battery supply or poor ground connection affecting LIN communications
  • Recent module replacement/update with incompatible software or incorrect coding

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Internal LIN10 communication failure detected — control module indicates LIN transceiver or internal electronics fault causing unreliable or absent LIN network communication.
