Causes

  • Failed or intermittent switch internals (contacts or PCB)
  • Open or short in switch harness wiring
  • Corroded, loose, or damaged connector pins
  • Poor or missing ground or supply voltage to switch
  • Faulty body or gateway control module reading the switch
  • Software/firmware glitch or incorrect module programming

Symptoms

  • Related function(s) do not operate (e.g., windows, lights, locks, ignition depending on switch)
  • Intermittent operation of the affected function
  • Warning or message on dash regarding system fault
  • Related modules log additional communication or electrical DTCs
  • No response when actuating the switch or inconsistent behavior

What to check

  • Read and record all stored DTCs and freeze frame data with a diagnostic scan tool
  • Note whether code is current, intermittent, or history; clear code and attempt to reproduce
  • Visually inspect switch and nearby wiring for damage, corrosion, or water ingress
  • Inspect connectors for bent pins, corrosion, pushed-out terminals, and secure locking tangs
  • Backprobe switch connector while operating switch and measure supply, signal, and ground
  • Check vehicle battery voltage and ground integrity before and during testing

Signal parameters

  • Switch supply: typical 12 V (battery) present at connector with ignition on (measure 11–14 V)
  • Logic/signal line: many switches use a 5 V reference and produce a 0–5 V signal; closed/open states typically near 0 V or near reference (check service data)
  • Continuity when actuated: closed switch resistance typically
  • Ground: near 0 Ω to chassis ground when measured between switch ground terminal and known good chassis ground
  • CAN bus (if switch reports via gateway): bus idle differential ~2.5 V, single-wire modules as specified by manufacturer

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect an OEM-capable scan tool, read all U and B codes and freeze frame data; note event time and conditions
  2. Clear U2002 and attempt to reproduce while monitoring live values related to the switch
  3. Identify the exact switch specified in service information for U2002 on this model/year
  4. Visually inspect the switch, surrounding trim, and harness; repair obvious damage
  5. Backprobe the switch connector: verify reference supply, signal voltage, and ground while operating the switch—compare with expected values from service data
  6. If supply or ground missing, trace and repair power/ground circuit to fuse/junction box; check related fuses and relays
  7. If signal voltage does not change when operating switch but supply and ground are good, remove and bench-test the switch or substitute a known-good switch
  8. If intermittent or only when harness is moved, perform wiggle test along harness path (hinge areas) to locate broken conductor; repair with solder and heat-shrink or replace wire/loom as required
  9. Inspect and clean connector terminals; repair or replace connector pins/terminals if corroded or loose
  10. If wiring and switch test good, check the receiving control module(s) for software updates or known issues; perform module reprogramming or reset per Land Rover service guidance
  11. After repairs, clear codes and perform full function test and a road test or operation cycle to confirm the fault does not recur
  12. Document repairs and advise customer if water damage or progressive wear is suspected

Likely causes

  • Corroded connector at switch or junction block
  • Broken wire at flex point (door hinge, steering column)
  • Failed switch contacts due to wear or moisture
  • Loose ground or low supply voltage to the switch circuit
