Causes

  • Intermittent or lost CAN/LIN communication between modules
  • Damaged or corroded connector(s) or wiring (short/open/ground fault)
  • Low or unstable battery/charging system voltage
  • Faulty motor control module or related ECU software bug
  • Poor grounds or power supply to the motor module
  • Electromagnetic interference or high-resistance terminals

Symptoms

  • Related motor function not working or intermittent (depends on which motor is affected)
  • Warning lamps or messages may appear on dash (may be generic network or specific system warnings)
  • Reduced driveability or limp-home behavior if motor is critical to propulsion or safety systems
  • Stored U2011 with one or more additional network communication codes
  • No obvious mechanical fault in the motor but electrical control not responding

What to check

  • Read all stored codes and freeze-frame data with a J2534/compatible diagnostic tool; note time-stamps and related U or P codes
  • Check battery state-of-charge and charging system voltage (should be ~12.6 V at rest, 13.5–14.8 V running)
  • Inspect connectors and wiring at motor module, gateway, and related modules for corrosion, damage, loose pins or water intrusion
  • Check for service bulletins/technical updates for this DTC and perform recommended software updates
  • Scan network for presence of the expected module (module may not be enumerating on the bus)
  • Perform a wiggle test on harness while monitoring for communication dropouts

Signal parameters

  • Battery voltage (V) — static and while cranking/operating: expect ~12.4–14.8 V
  • CAN High/Low idle voltages: approx. CAN_H ~2.5 V, CAN_L ~2.5 V (differential ~0 V idle)
  • CAN differential during activity: ~2.5 V swing between CAN_H and CAN_L (approx. ±1 V each side)
  • Message frequency for implicated motor module — compare to known-good reference (packets per second)
  • Error counters or fault frame counts from gateway or network monitor
  • Module supply and ground continuity resistance (

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a professional scan tool and record all stored and pending codes, data streams, and freeze-frame information
  2. Verify battery voltage and charging system; recharge or replace battery if voltage is borderline and re-check
  3. Check for related DTCs (U0100, U0141, U0299, etc.) that help localize network segment or gateway issues
  4. Visually inspect connectors, pins and wiring for the motor module and any intermediate gateway modules; repair any corrosion or damage
  5. Perform a wiggle test on wiring and connectors while monitoring network messages for dropouts
  6. If messages are missing or corrupt, use an oscilloscope or CAN/LIN data logger to capture bus activity and verify correct idle voltages and differential signals
  7. Confirm module power and ground circuits have correct voltage and low resistance to chassis ground; repair as needed
  8. If wiring and power are good but communication still fails, check for required software updates or reflash the motor module per manufacturer procedure
  9. If a suspect module is identified and all wiring/power are good, consider replacing with a programmed/known-good module and verify resolution
  10. Clear codes and road/test to ensure fault does not return; document repair and any parts replaced

Likely causes

  • Corroded connector or pin at the motor module or gateway
  • Open or short in CAN high/low network to the motor module
  • Faulty motor control module (intermittent failure)
  • Low battery/poor charging causing module brown-out
  • Missing or out-of-date module software/firmware
