Causes

  • Corrupted or failed module software (incomplete or interrupted reflash)
  • Incompatible or incorrect software version loaded to the module
  • Loss of CAN/LIN network communication to the baggage compartment module
  • Low battery or unstable vehicle voltage during programming or module operation
  • Water ingress or connector corrosion at the module
  • Internal module hardware failure (memory or processor)

Symptoms

  • One or more baggage compartment functions inoperative (power tailgate, trunk lights, lock/unlock)
  • Warning or fault message in the instrument cluster indicating rear compartment error
  • Intermittent or permanent loss of communication with baggage compartment module on diagnostic tool
  • Tailgate operation abnormal (stuck, will not open/close, or operates unpredictably)
  • Interior lamp or courtesy lighting faults associated with rear compartment
  • Possible battery drain if module wakes repeatedly or is in fault state

What to check

  • Connect a Land Rover–compatible diagnostic tool (IDS/SDD or approved OEM tool) and read stored freeze frame and full DTC list
  • Verify module presence on network and read module identification and software part number/version
  • Check vehicle battery/resting voltage (should be >12.4 V for stable diagnostics and reflashing) and charging system operation
  • Inspect fuses related to baggage compartment control and replace if necessary
  • Visually inspect connectors and harness at the baggage compartment module for corrosion, bent pins, water ingress and secure mating
  • Check CAN/LIN network health: presence of CAN traffic, error frames, and termination resistances

Signal parameters

  • VBAT (battery) — nominal ~12–14.5 V during normal operation; low or unstable voltage can corrupt software
  • Wake/sleep control line status for the baggage compartment module (wake signal present when expected)
  • CAN bus message presence and rate for the module (module should transmit periodic status messages when awake)
  • Diagnostic request/response to module via OEM tool — module should report part number and software version
  • LIN bus status if applicable for local devices (power tailgate motor, sensors)
  • Error counters or CRC/checksum values reported by module during programming attempts

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Use an OEM Land Rover diagnostic tool (IDS/SDD) to read and record U2015 and any related DTCs and freeze-frame data.
  2. Confirm battery is fully charged; connect battery support or charger to maintain >12.4 V during testing and reprogramming.
  3. Verify module presence on the vehicle network and attempt to read the module identification and software/ECU part number. Note if the tool cannot communicate.
  4. Inspect wiring, connector seals and module mounting area for water damage or corrosion; repair any physical damage found.
  5. Check fuses and grounds related to the baggage compartment module and repair as required.
  6. Use a scope or CAN bus diagnostic function to verify CAN/LIN traffic and look for error frames or lack of messages from the module. Address network faults first (shorts, open circuits, improper termination).
  7. If communication is intermittent or software version is incorrect/corrupt, attempt to re-establish communications and perform a controlled reflash/update of the module software using the OEM tool. Ensure battery support is connected for the duration of the reflash.
  8. Clear codes, power-cycle vehicle per manufacturer procedure, then re-scan. Test baggage compartment functions (tailgate open/close, lights, locks) to confirm operation.
  9. If reprogramming fails or module remains nonresponsive after network and power checks, consider replacement of the baggage compartment control module and program the new unit with the correct software and vehicle configuration.
  10. Document all steps, software versions before/after, and any replaced parts for warranty and service records.

Likely causes

  • Interrupted software update or failed reprogramming attempt
  • Vehicle fitted with aftermarket device that altered network messages
  • Damaged wiring or poorly mated connector causing intermittent communication
  • Battery voltage low during a previous service or reflash leading to corrupted firmware
