Panel communication error

Causes

  • Faulty panel/module (instrument cluster, switch-panel or body control module)
  • Open or shorted CAN bus wiring (CAN H / CAN L) or damaged connector
  • Poor power supply or ground to the affected module
  • Intermittent connector contact due to corrosion, water ingress, or bent pins
  • Missing or incorrect network termination (faulty/removed 120 Ω resistor)
  • Software mismatch or corrupted module software/configuration

Symptoms

  • Warning message or MIL lamp related to communication fault
  • Inoperative or intermittent instrument cluster displays or panel controls
  • Multiple systems behaving erratically or showing status 'Not Fit For Service'
  • Cannot communicate with the affected module via diagnostic tool
  • Other modules report related U-codes or bus-off conditions

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and full DTC list; note any other U-codes or historical faults
  • Verify battery voltage (should be within 12.4–14.6 V during tests) and stable power
  • Check fuses and relays supplying the panel/module
  • Visually inspect connectors, pins and harness for corrosion, damage or water ingress
  • Backprobe and verify power and ground at the affected module connector
  • Measure CANH and CANL voltages at the module with ignition ON (no crank)

Signal parameters

  • CAN bus recessive voltage: both CANH and CANL roughly ~2.5 V
  • CAN dominant state: CANH typically rises to ~3.5 V and CANL falls to ~1.5 V on active bits (verify with scope)
  • Expected differential idle ~0 V, dominant pulses produce ~2 V differential (vehicle-dependent)
  • Expected CAN bus resistance between CANH and CANL with key off: ~60 ohms (two 120 Ω terminators)
  • Common bus speeds: 250 kbps or 500 kbps depending on module/network — verify vehicle-specific spec

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a full-function diagnostic tool and record U2022 freeze frame and any concurrent codes. Note whether code is current or historical.
  2. Check battery state of charge and charging system. Low voltage can cause communication errors — recharge or replace battery if needed.
  3. Inspect connectors, harness and module for signs of water, corrosion, or damage. Repair/clean as required and reseat connectors.
  4. Verify power and ground at the panel/module with a meter. Repair any open or high-resistance connections.
  5. With ignition ON, measure CANH and CANL at the module. If voltages are outside expected ranges, trace wiring to find short or open.
  6. With power OFF, measure resistance between CANH and CANL at several points. If much higher than ~60 Ω, a terminator or wiring open is likely.
  7. If available, use an oscilloscope to observe bus waveform while reproducing fault; look for noise, missing messages, or repeated dominant states (bus-off).
  8. Isolate the module: disconnect the panel/module connector and see if the bus behavior changes or related codes clear. If the bus returns to normal, the module is likely faulty.
  9. Check for aftermarket modules or recent repairs that could have altered the network. Remove/restore to factory condition and retest.
  10. If wiring, connectors, power and grounds check good and the fault persists, consult manufacturer TSBs and perform software reflash or module replacement per OEM procedure.
  11. After repair or replacement, clear codes and perform a full network scan and road test to confirm the fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Corroded or loose connector at the instrument panel or body module
  • Damaged CAN pair (chafing, pinched, rodent damage) causing intermittent timeout
  • Module internal failure (hardware fault) after verifying wiring and power
  • Blown fuse or poor ground at module causing the module to drop off the bus

Fault status

⚠️ Status
U2022 — Panel communication error: the indicated panel/module failed to communicate correctly on the vehicle network. Inspect module power/ground, connectors, CAN wiring and terminators before considering module replacement.
